And now the game changes

Posted 03-25-2008 at 01:15 AM by HarveyJ
I was originally hired as a sales monkey...
Then it turned out, having been a refugee from the W.E.L.L. and using the Internet when Eudora was the norm, what I considered perfectly ordinary knowledge turns out to have a job title: Data Forensics Specialist...

Apparently, I am now not only a sales monkey, but also a DFS, as I track down domain owners, even the ones hidden behind proxy services, and say "BUY MY STUFF! IT'LL MAKE YOU MONEY, AND THEN I'LL BE A PARASITE AND SKIM SOME OFF THE TOP!! DID I MENTION IT'LL MAKE YOU MORE MONEY!!!?"

Of course, I don't send it in an email quite like that, because I am older than 14, refuse to have a MySpace page, and actually have a bit of tact.

It's starting to turn out well for me.
My clients (sub affiliates?) are starting to see their first paychecks come in, and by the same token, I'm starting to see mine...
I get the feeling I'm working a lot harder than they are

But then the worm turns... and apparently my piss-farting around with Photoshop during my lunchbreak to design what I thought would be a cool landing page, specifically optimized for use on an iPhone (and other PDA devices) turns out to be the fastest bit of web-graphic design that's been seen at this company... So now I am also on the graphic design team... with no raise

Maybe I should consider going into business for myself one of these days...

I'm new here so I'll ask a (probably dumb) question: What is W.E.L.L.?

Oh, when raise time comes point out all the tasks you do and how many other companies could use you myriad of talents. It is usually worth a couple of percentage points

Hey JimKiser

The WELL was the Whole Earth Link(ed) Library.
Basically, it was the World Wide Web before there was a world wide web. VERY exclusive, mostly academics, and very expensive to access, as computer time and communication links fast enough were insanely expensive in the late 80s & very early 90s...
...And most people didn't expect a 10 year old to know how to fake a credit card.
