I should mention that domain brokers actually do a lot of work. For those whose sole line of business is brokerage, it is not unreasonable for them to command 15-30% to broker a domain name. They also market your domains heavily amongst I high net-worth group of buyers, bidders, and industry-specific parties.

We broker for free, but that means that we are handling in-bound interest for the owners and using years of experience to close deals in a way that's fair for both parties. In this case, we do it only if the domain is parked with us.

For GREAT domains, we will actively market, but they should be 1-2 word .coms. <img src="http://www.dnforum.com/attachments/domain-name-appraisal-discussion/1332d1368821966-appraisenames-com-logo.jpg" border="0" alt="Name: logo.jpg

Personally, not only have a noticed a drop in sales but an overall drop in bites and counter offers. In the past it wouldn't take me very long to flip some of my better aged names with good search engine results. I could usually get some interest from about 1 out of ever 10 emails I sent. Nowadays it seams like I'm lucky if I get that out of 20 emails. Even though the economy is doing bad right now, this isn't anything new. Sales have been pretty decent early this year and last year as well. Could it be because of the holidays I suppose? I guess that's possible..but once again, this isn't something new. I've noticed these end user sale differences since June or July.

Back in February Rick Schwartz wrote a post “Are Flat Rate Auctions Coming to T.R.A.F.F.I.C.? (http://www.ricksblog.com/my_weblog/2011/02/are-flat-rate-auctions-coming-to-traffic.html)” where he introduced the Guaranteed Placement Program, which is the new format for how the October 2011...

Back in February Rick Schwartz wrote a post “Are Flat Rate Auctions Coming to T.R.A.F.F.I.C.?” where he introduced the Guaranteed Placement Program, which is the new format for how the October 2011 T.R.A.F.F.I.C. auction at the Ritz Carlton, Fort Lauderdale will be run. In a nutshell, a flat rate of $500-$2500 will be charged to domain owners to submit a name in the October auction. This will make domain owners carefully consider names they submit and how they price them.

This is a very interesting idea with great potential because it will force those who want to have their names in the top domain auction of the year choose premium domains and price them realistically. Unless some really uneducated domainers with lots of money to blow decide to list regfee names for $500+ a pop this new format will bring some good domains to the market with prices that should encourage bidding. Schwartz mentioned that with this program they will greatly reduce or eliminate commission fees and hinted a commission schedule with a sliding scale may be in place. Also, there will be NO silent auction following the live auction, another change I think will benefit the live auction.. you either bid now or it’s gone!

So, you submit your reasonably priced premium domain to the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. auction in October and pay your flat rate, you’re all set now for a great sale now right? Wrong. T.R.A.F.F.I.C. auction organizers are not promoting domains in the auction for you. You have made the investment to list your domain at T.R.A.F.F.I.C., now it’s your responsibility to get interested parties to show up. That’s why Rick started talking about the auction in February. A quote from one of the commenters on Rick’s post that made a lot of sense ‘John’ said:

Here’s some other reasons I think it will work: Have you seen endusers move? They move slow, real slow. Sometimes their process and red-tape prevents them from moving quickly. Sometimes it takes months for me to close a sale with those people. Creating the buzz now and promoting earlier allows the deep pocketed endusers time to get their ducks in a row to come bid on your name.

So many of the auctions that accompany domain industry events and domain auctions in general are put together so fast and marketed for such a short period of time that it makes it very unlikely for end users to show up and bid on a premium name. Oftentimes after major domain auctions I hear folks moaning and groaning on forums and blogs about how these are all domainer to domainer sales and the industry is not moving forward, end users never show up to auctions, etc. Can an auction promoter really guarantee to promote dozens or hundreds of names to relevant end users? If you are serious about selling a great name now, the venue is there, the guaranteed placement program in effect, you know best the end users for your name and if you want them to show up you have plenty of time to notify and remind them of the auction.

I feel this could change the way domain auctions are organized and am hoping to see a very successful auction in October. I still have a couple questions about the new format.. Will potential buyers be able to bid remotely by phone or online? Playing the devils advocate here, I read somewhere in Rick’s writing that “crap names” will not be allowed into the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. auction in October, but if you have a guaranteed placement program how can you disallow certain names? Especially if a seller thinks he has end users that will show up for the auction? Last, how/where does a seller submit names now for the October auction?

Not much has changed with domaining practices. I did switch to GoDaddy because I couldn't afford Yahoo's rates. Looks like NetworkSolutions charged me an extra year on a dumb .fm site I bought, but it was a lesson learned, especially when I tried to transfer it to, well, anywhere.

Anyway I'm looking to be less of a domaining hayseed. I read Edwin John's domain guide on Clickbank and got what seem to be good insights, but when I mentioned them here they were politely challenged. So if you've got some extra expertise you wouldn't mind sharing with a complete beginner in selling domain names, feel free to say hi.

INTRODUCTION

Recently I have been dealing with a domain theft. Trying to locate information and warning the original user. 1 thing this process has brought to light is the little people know about securing domain names.
The following is my thoughts on how to best secure your domain names. This is by no means a complete guide however if you think you can add too it please feel free in commenting and I will keep this post updated.

Importance Of Updated Whois

Some people are very concerned with privacy and as such put false information in their whois. This is dangerous on 2 counts.

Having incorrect whois information makes it hard/impossible for your registrar to contact you in the event of a problem.

It is against ICANN's rules to have false information. If you are caught you could find your domain confiscated. You also run the risk of if you are subject to a WIPO they will be unable to contact you and you will most likely lose the hearing by default.

The proper way to handle your privacy is to use something called Whois privacy, almost all registrars offer this type of service. I would urge you to avoid using a whois privacy service not associated with your registrar as you are unlikely to receive any necessary correspondence. Some cctld's offer this service free for private individuals at no extra cost (for example .co.uk offer this).

SECURING YOUR WHOIS

Regardless of whether you have whois privacy enabled on your domain or not I believe it to be a good practice to use an email address solely for whois information. This is the domain people will come to know as your whois email. If this is only used for whois and they hack it they cannot do much damage with it. On the other hand if they hack this email and it is the same email used for your registrar then they can simply use the forgot password feature of your registrar to get the password, the rest is easy.

Bottom line is make sure your whois information is 100% accurate and updated.

SECURING YOUR REGISTRAR

There are several things you can do to secure your registrar. The first consideration you have is which registrar to use. Make this decision wisely, some registrars handle security better than others. Check out what features these registrars offer to help with security, even if it is simply emailing you when changes are made. Ensure you have a way to contact the registrar in the event of a problem. There is no point having a contact number for your registrar if they either never answer or are closed a lot. Once you have settled on a registrar then when signing up with them ensure you do the following:-

Supply valid information on sign up

Use a different email than your whois email

Choose a secure password, avoid words and ensure that the password contains uppercase, lowercase, numbers and if possible special characters

Enable any security features the registrar offers

Ensure registrar lock is enabled by default if possible

Some registrars also offer extra services to further secure your domains. These services can make it extremely hard to transfer a domain but if this is the registrar you are going to be with long term then all is fine why would it matter? That exact hindrance is too your benefit.

If during sign up the registrar asks for security questions step off of the beaten track. A lot of people use questions such as the following as security questions:-

Place of birth

Mothers maiden name

Date of birth

If the person has your name and town it really is not difficult to find out these pieces of information using publicly accessible resources. If you can make up your own question make something very obscure up that no one else could ever no, not even your family or friends.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Other best practices can include ensuring for example that you use software that can track your domains, ensure this software also contacts you in some way in the event of any changes to the whois of your domain. If you couple this with for example email notifications from your registrar you are ensuring that you have a fail safe. If 1 method fails you have a backup.

WHAT IF MY DOMAIN IS STOLEN

If you are unfortunate enough to find your domain is stolen you should first and foremost contact the registrar to stop any transfer. While this is happening ensure you change ALL of your passwords, this includes your email passwords and registrar passwords.

Also make a big stink about it, post on forums such as Namepros and DNForum, or of course any other trading forum or social network sites. The more people know about it the more people you can rely on to keep you updated and alert you of any changes.

Have I got anything wrong here? Have I forgotten anything? If so please do leave a message. Also if you have something to add please do. I will ensure this post is kept updated with more and better information.

If you wish to use this article on your own site please do as long as you credit this blog for that information. The more people who know how to secure their domains the better. Lets make as difficult as possible for the thieves, lets make their life a living hell.

Ok, as some of you know, I also work for a small affiliate marketing group.

Most of our big hitters are domainers. A few of them are even on here.

Anyway, we're going to be expanding our offerings shortly, and have been tossing a few ideas around the office... But I figure it'd be easier just to ask you guys, as you're pretty much our target customer base.

So, for those of you that are parking domains, we're wanting to offer sites that you can simply redirect to (iframe, 301, A-record, whatever), and get credited for each sale that gets made. Pretty simple CPA/PPS type affiliate marketing.
We've already got case studies that show after a certain daily unique traffic threshold, affiliate marketing just drop kicks domain parking right in the face and steals its lunch money.

So, I'm wondering, what sort of categories of underperforming, or undeveloped, domains people have in their portfolios tha they think would have traffic that could convert into sales quite nicely.
I'm not asking for specific domains, although if you're willing to divulge, that would be awesome too.

Most of the categories we're thinking of will probably end up being some sort of retail arrangement. Either aggregate stores using BANS or Drupal, although we are looking to get new stores in on it.
Software is also going to be a big one for us, because naturally we'd prefer a service where the customer can get the product immediately, so there's no screw up in the drop-shipping.

Obviously, this isn't going to work for every domain out there.
This is pretty much geared towards domains that are made up of words, and generally more premium TLDs like .net or .com.
We'll probably be working to get some ccTLD specific offers to, if we can, but that's much lower on the priority list at the moment.

From what is known, on September 8th the first stage of registration with Ñ, accents and Portuguese characters. This stage ends on December 16th 2008.

Normally, there is always the concern and nervousness to register the domains as fast as possible so that no one else gets to it before we do, but according to NICs rules for this stage it is very hard for someone to anticipate.

In the case of the IDNs in Argentina we asked how would the system for requests work and we propose many scenarios to see what would happen.

We were told that the registration system would work the following way:

1.- The most important rule on this stage is that only those who have registered a domain name before July 31st 2008 without multilingual characters will be able to request the domain with IDN following NIC Argentina rule.

A common error is that some people has suppose that they can register domains in other languages, for example: If you have informaciones.com.ar you could register informaçoes.com.ar but this not correct since only substitutions of characters are allowed but not translations of languages.

2.- The system of IDN is not only for extension com.ar but also for net.ar, org.ar, etc. If I have the domain papa.com.ar registered before July 31st I can register papá.com.ar.

What happens if a person has registered a domain papa.com.ar and another person has papa.net.ar? The owner of papa.com.ar can register papá.com.ar and the owner of papa.net.ar can register papá.net.ar Having a domain net.ar does not give you right to request a com.ar.

3.- In those cases where a person has the domain ninyo.com.ar and another company has the domain nino.com.ar, under the rules of substitution both have the right to register niño.com.ar, then who keeps the domain? The one who has the domain name from before and prior to July 31st will keep it.

4.- It is also very interesting that the owner of the domain a.com.ar has practically secured the domains: á.com.ar, â.com.ar, ã.com.ar and à.com.ar.

Last but not least the ones who have registered the domains: n.com.ar, nh.com.ar, ni.com.ar, nn.com.ar, ny.com.ar and gn.com.ar, under the rules of substitution all can request the domain ñ.com.ar, but the owner of ny.com.ar will keep it since he has it registered first (on April 1998) and before July 31st, 2008.

From Monday September 8th of this year and until December 16th inclusive the registration will be in phases for domains with Ñ, accents and Portuguese characters.

The registration in phases will be extended for a period of 100 days until December 17th 2008.
During this period of 100 days only those who already have registered a domain which can be equivalent (without the multilingual) before July 31st 2008 can apply on this phase, having in mind the conversion rules.

Rules of Conversion:

The characters “á” “â” “ã” or “à” will be able to be used in place of the letter “a”.

b)The characters “é” “ê” or “è” will be able to be used in place of the letter “e”.

c)The characters “í” or “ì” will be able to be used in place of the letter “i”.

d)The characters “ ó” “ô” “õ “or “ò” will be able to be used in place of the letter “o”.

e)The characters “u” or “ü” will be able to be used in place of the letter “u”.

f)The character “ñ” will be able to be used in place of the following combinations “n”, “nh”, “ni”, “nn”, “ny”, “gn”.

g)The character “ç” will be able to be used in place of the letters “c” and/or “s”.

For example: If an entity has registered papa.com.ar and the date of this registration is before July 31st 2008, the entity will be able to request papá.com.ar.

If there is more than one requester for the same domain IDN (in cases where domains requested with “ç” or “ñ”), the domain will correspond to the registration of the domain with characters ASCII (without multilingual characters) that was registered before July 31st 2008.

The requests for registration with multilingual characters that was admitted during the period of the 100 days will be pending approval until Wednesday December 17th 2008.From that date, and until Monday March 16th 2009 inclusive, of limit date, (depending on the number of requests admitted), NIC Argentina will approve the requests of domains with multilingual characters.

From the date of December 17th NIC Argentina will start to approve the requests of domains with IDN. Once this process is finished, NIC Argentina will announce, with at least 15 days in advance, which will be the date to start registrations for general public of domains with IDNs.
