URL Forwarding

Aside from using MyDomain.com for free URL forwarding or paying Dotster.com for forwarding on 700 domain names, what other methods are there, within 'MY' control to forward users to my domain names?

What's up with name parking?

Any help would be appreciated.

Registerfly and enom offer free forwarding if your domains are there. some others do as well. Third party services are out there as well such as http://www.domainredirect.com , but you usually have to manage them individually with separate logins per name making it difficult.

Parking is the way to go though. I have a reseller hosting account where I park almost as many names as you have on a few main domains. Many are parked at the domain in my sig and if you type in any of those names individually, they lead directly to the for sale page for that name. I also get stats for referrals when names are typed in, letting me know which get natural type-in traffic. The name also stays in the browser address bar without hidden frames. See how this works:

http://www.adoptabledomains.com - main domain
http://www.fish.us - parked on the above

-RJ-'s script does the work of taking it to the sale page after arrival, but http redirects or other scripts can be done from standard web pages or you can just send all to the same domain index page.

If you are interested, I could set up a name on my hosting account for you, setting your own main domain as a default nameserver and giving you full DNS control. Pricing would depend on what kind of bandwidth your domains use and if all domains comply with my TOS contract.

If you are stuck with Dotster, I think probably MyDomain.com is the best solution for you.

It is a lot of work though. Enom would be better.

Enom's URL forwarding is first class imho.

I have to agree, enom URL forwarding is the best so far.

Yes,

Enom is great.

MyDomains needs some competition though.

Quacks a lot!

Thanks for all the feedback!

Most of my domain names are with eNom.com ( OUTSTANDING ), but the first 700 that I registered as well as the names that I still register via NameWinner.com are dependant upon MyDomain.com forwarding. I want to take full control, because when MyDomain.com is down, 700 sales pages are dead.

I especially liked adoptabledomains reply... Maybe I should get a hosting reseller account myself? I have been toying with the idea, but have been too busy to follow through.

Also, I am implementing RJ's script, which is why I am trying to take control of everything... 90% of my sales inquires come from only 20% of my collection... The domains that have sales pages.

Further, now that eNom.com no longer shows WhoIs information unless you are using the eNom.com web site WhoIs, my domain contact information, which notes that 'This Domain Name May Be For Sale', is no longer seen unless a potential buyer can figure out that they need to go to eNom.com to get WhoIs information.

Whoa-is-me

It is a big help to have full control over DNS. I also get all default mail for all the domains, you just have to sort out the mostly spam from potential inquires or misdirected similar domain names.

Another alternative if you want FULL DNS control without a hosting account is zoneedit.com. It's a pay service, but has about the best DNS on the net if you don't have full control at a host or don't have a host. http://www.zoneedit.com/ . For the number of domains you have, a reseller account may even cost less. You might consider it just for the domains located where you don't have control. (the first 5 are free).

It does work great... but I just had a problem last night. My hosting provider for my reseller account suspended the domain due to using "excessive resources". I figured out that the search bots and some probably email harvesting spiders were really hitting my site hard, and since every page is dynamically created, each page taking server side cycles to create the pages as it spidered my site. Possibly since each domain is parked there, it duplicated the effort on many domains. I got the site reinstated this morning, with the promise I would put in robots.txt files to keep the robots under control and create some .htaccess limits to keep out the bad spider bots that ignore that file. One spider alone has been using almost a Gig of bandwidth per month for the last 3 months. Worth looking into for any domainseller script user.

I can see the whois contact and company name from other whois servers for my enom domains. I use whois-search.com and whois.sc for most of my searches. I only have problems with .org domains not showing info since the recent changes. What whois servers are not showing the info?

I also list the contact company name as AdoptableDomains.com, which sort of speaks for itself. Some people also name a name server something link ns.my-for-sale-domains.com as another way to indicate they are for sale, or the email address as buy-this-domain@thedomainname.com. As long as they work, they are all legitimate ways of showing intent in the whois record.

Quacks again, Mark

Mark,

Your reply was terrific. I should know all this stuff by now, but when you are busy mining, nothing else seems to matter.

I will definitely look further into my own hosting account. I am currently looking at http://www.new.aplus.net/page.php?pg=main - That's www.Aplus.net

The zoneedit solution would be too expensive.

As for RJ's script, I have decided not to use the self-generated page, but instead, forward my domain names to a landing page and then to my Reseller system. In that way, the landing page can change as I see a need. From a text page to a form to a simple URL Forward applet going to my Reseller system.

The WhoIs problem now has more light on it, thanks again, Mark. My WhoIs http://www.domainduck.net/hi/frames/whois/who-is.htm and the NameBargain WhoIs are two that I know of that time out at eNom.com's servers. I wonder if eNom.com is putting blockades up? I will have to contact them.

So, thanks again for your complete answers. It has helped a lot. Now, all I need is the time to implement whatever it is that I will need to implement.

I use httpme.com which has super support and a nice community of resellers (they only sell to resellers, not competing with them), and when I was looking, my second and third choices would have been voxtreme.com and weberz.com. You might check them out too. All have had good reviews at webhosttalk.com. Good luck. The initial planning and setup is the tough part.

Some registrar sites now limit the number of querries per day/hour from specific other sites as a measure to stop harvesters of emails by spammers. you may be up against a site that's met it's quota very quickly. I believe whois-source makes you verify a graphical number after so many searches to stop email harvest bots from stressing their whois system.

BTW, another URL forwarding site is domainredirect.com which I used a long time ago.

With enom, every domain name comes with DNS management for free.

You can also host dns or dynamic dns for small fee if you don;t want to transfer your domain name to enom reseller.

Regards,
TW
