Very strange 'Transfer order'

Friends,

I received this email yesterday.
The domain in question I do not own, nor have I ever heard of it:

********************************
************************************************** ************************
** DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL **
** IF YOU NEED HELP, PASTE THE WEB LINK BELOW INTO YOUR BROWSER WINDOW **
** https://secure.registerapi.com/help/?siteid=4798 **
************************************************** ************************

The Email Address(es) for the Administrative Contact of the domain(s) below have been retrieved. A transfer authorization email will be sent to each contact to confirm the transfer of each domain.
Once each domain has been confirmed, a request to the registry will be made to initiate a transfer of the domain. Transfer Request acceptance from the registry can take anywhere from one to 30 days. As each domain is accepted, payment will be processed and the domains placed in your account.

Domains:

METH****.COM

Thank you, The Automated Domain Transfer System
******************************************

it came from an email at registerapi.com, and was sent to
dns.administrator@METH****.COM

My BIG Question, is why did I receive this email???
The domain resolves to what appears to be a company.
Is this one of those new glitches after the 12th???

The subject is: Transfer Order TSouzuwWuToYXRNies status

and, as I said, I , and the owners received this.

Should I react?
Whom should I inform?
is this an attempted hijacking by someone?
And why on Earth did I receive this?
the domain (according to whois) is at netsol.

Thanks.

Re: Very strange 'Transfer order'

Blasted ICANN (because I am the 900 lb gorilla) may have opened a huge can of worms.

Re: Very strange 'Transfer order'

Contact the current owners about this situation and advise them to check with their registrar to clear the issue up. If it is a possible "hijacking", all parties should inform ICANN of it.

Was it from the gaining or losing registrar?

I have no idea,
I did what I believe is right.
I contacted the owners.

I sure hope that If one of my domains was to be in this situation, I will be contacted.

Attention: SODAGIRLS.COM, KILLERxxxx.COM administrative contact: my email

Re: Transfer of SODAGIRLS.COM, KILLEXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX on Nov 12, 2004, 23:15 GMT for us to become the new registrar of record.

You have received this message because you are listed as the Registered Name Holder or Administrative contact for this domain name in the WHOIS database.

Please read the following important information about transferring your domain name:

You must agree to enter into a new Registration Agreement with us. You can review the full terms and conditions of the Agreement at https://secure.registerapi.com/order...eid=1100301xxx

Once you have entered into the Agreement, the transfer will take place within five (5) calendar days unless the current registrar of record denies the request.

Once a transfer takes place, you will not be able to transfer to another registrar for 60 days, apart from a transfer back to the original registrar,in cases where both registrars so agree or where a decision in the dispute resolution process so directs.

If you WISH TO PROCEED with the transfer, you must respond to this message via the following method (note if you do not respond by Nov 23, 2004, 11:15 GMT, SODAGIRLS.COM, KILLERXXXXXXXXXX will not be transferred to us.)

Please go to our website, https://secure.registerapi.com/order...xxxxxxxxxxxxxx to confirm.

If you DO NOT WANT the transfer to proceed, then don't respond to this message.

If you have any questions about this process, please contact https://secure.registerapi.com/gethe...eid=1100301xxx.

Looks like Dotster is the weakest link here.

So they just think we don't have a life, and can live with dealing with faulty transfers on a daily basis. Uh?

I agree with NameThink, that Dotster (or possibly Register.com) seems to be the "weakest link". It doesn't seem to have anything to do with ICann's rules, unless in implementing them, Dotster introduced an unforseen security hole. These look like "tests", if they're fraudulent.

DOTSTER -> GAINING REGISTRAR
REGISTER.COM -> LOSING REGISTRAR

Dotser is e-mailing you to confirm you want the transfer to happen. The question would be, whether Register.com is sending out an e-mail to confirm a transfer OUT, and whether Dotster is letting some OTHER factor determine what the administrator e-mail is, other than the current record. If someone can "fake" their source out, they can "confirm" through any address they want.

Simple: contact them. (yeah right...)

Doesn't dotster lock its domains, I'm sorry? If so, something's definitely wrong
