8000 exact searches, .org available. Go for it?

sensible two word domain. 8100 exact seaches on Google keyword tool (14k phrase, 22k broad). Avg CPC is $0.50

The .com's parked, the .net's a developed site, the .org's available.

Development can be largely automated once I've built a front-end (a few weeks part time work probably) - scraping image content from public domain/free image libraries on this topic.

This is exactly what the .net has done, so I'm worried about how I'd differentiate my site.

But it's the fact it'd be a .org and the competition that's putting me off.

The .net is at the top of google for the keywords, and seems like it's got good traffic and userbase (alexa US rank 193k, global 300k, 150 sites linking in). I think I can do a little better on the interface and features. But essentially it'd be the same as the .net site.

So would you go for it?

Depends on how much it is.. .I don't like non .com too much cause you lose on the type ins.. However, if you are going to develop and you are confident that you can get it to the first page results, then not a bad idea. I know a few people who take .us names and develop them and are able to get good traffic by being on the first page of g results.

It completely depends on the name. Some names just doesn't sound right for the .org extension and others fits it like a glove.

    Thanks for the replies everyone. I've decided to go for it. S p a c e W a l l p a p e r s . o r g is now mine. Cost: $10 (reg fee)

NASA release hi-res images to the public domain, making content creation pretty easy, and free from copyright infringement worries.

However, this is exactly what the people who own the .net have done, so I do have competition.

Still think it was a good idea? If not, why not?

    Thanks,
    -sj

It sounds like this is a niche that you know and enjoy. Since you are developing these names into sites, I think it is a good reg. You can also inter-link all of your wallpaper sites for an added SEO and traffic boost.

Thanks. Yes interlinking is a good idea, I'll do that. I'm not making masses of profit, but enough to keep me interested. There's some potential in the niches I think.

Someone once gave me some advice that I will share:

"I don't know how to build a site that makes me $10,000 a month, but I'm good at making ones that earn $10 a month - I'll just do that 1,000 times"

You'd be surprised how fast you can build an income generating portfolio that way - especially if you keep plowing back in your profits.

Yeah, that's always been my goal since I realised I was turning a profit on my blog. I'm getting there. Looking forward to the day I'm making xxxx per month though!

Do you have separate adsense accounts for each site in the portfolio or keep them all in one place?

That's the exact way to think. As long as each site is earning at least $0.03 per day, you're breaking even.

Best way to re-invest your earnings is to renew the domain name for the maximum period of time (usually 10 years). This gives you 3 benefits...

    1. Saves you from any increases in renewal fees for the next 10 years

    2. Google tends to like domains registered for longer

    3. No out of pocket costs besides Hosting for the next 10 years.

Funny, I used to think that too. But google.com is only registered for the next year. I'll be ready to dropcatch it in 2011!
