    Any alternatives to Wordpress MU?

I have the need to run a couple dozen of my own blogs, each with their own domain name. But I do not want to multiple installations. That would be a nightmare, especially with something like Wordpress that has ever-so-frequent upgrades and subsequent plugin incompatibilities. So, I'm thinking I'm going to need WPMU.

But, first, I wanted to check if there is something I'm missing. Is there an alternative to WPMU that will provide what I need?

wordpress mu is great if you have a large number of blogs. Unless you are going to get more then a dozen or so, you can just as easily support seperate wordpress installs by domain, subdomain and subdirectory. The biggest problem with wordpress mu is plugin issues. Themes are not the issue.

With a small number of sites, upgrades that just replace files can be scripted to drop/replace easily from the console or ftp

It's not so easy to upgrade separate installs unless they all have the same templates, mods and plugins. If they are all different, it's chaos.

Drupal is another program that has this flexibility built-in.

wordpress mu doesn't make the plugin incompat issues any easier to deal with, it just gets you a single code base for the core components.
