best books / courses for PHP?

I would like to learn php. I'm fairly fluent in html, css, and js. I was wondering if anybody had any good experiences with any particular books or courses.

    Thanks,

    John Z

I am reading "Beginning Ajax with PHP" by Lee Babin

Though it mostly focuses on Ajax techniques I think you would enjoy it with your background in JavaScript. I think there is also one solely about PHP.

I am enjoying it and it has lots of code snippets and full working applications you can use.

Re: best books / courses for PHP?

A fantastic site for books on web development is www.*********.com. Specifically, a book called "Build Your Own Database Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL"
. I bought a copy of this, and there's also a two-parter called "The PHP Anthology: Object Oriented PHP Solutions", which I've also used.

I guess I'm a bit of an evangelist for this site, cause I've bought a number of products from them and have just loved them all. (I'm not affiliated with them in anyway though, so nothing dodgy here, even though I'm so "pro-*********")

Edit: it appears that "s i t e p o i n t" is blocked... so where you see "*********", it should say that only without the spaces (hope I'm not breaching any rules by clarifying this... but I'm trying to be helpful, and "*******" isn't helpful...)

Get Sam's Teach Yourself PHP in 24 Hours!

I started out with that book and it's great. It covers the basics of PHP and if you have some programming experience already then you should learn fast. It's recommended if you haven't done much PHP coding earlier. Good luck!

I would say if you already understand the basics of logic programming (if's, loops, recursion, and so forth), just hit up some websites and read through the tutorials on doing basics. Chop them up and try implementing them into a website of your own.

php.net is a great reference for syntax, but they're crap for actually learning much.

The tutorials at phpfreaks.com have been great assistance to me when I was first learning php and mysql.
If it sounds too good to be true, post it on DNForum and you'll find some suckers!

"Programming PHP" co-written by the creator of PHP, Rasmus Lerdorf.

It's an amazing and informative book, well worth the money
