Theres no such thing as the "best hosting site", many people have vastly different requirements and budgets and ultimtately the best host is the one that suits you.

When shopping for a host the best advice you can be given is to be realistic.

+1 ^. Always test it out 1 month or so, before you even signup for 1 year contract or so. Stay away from netfirm as their hosting too unsecure. My basic html page keep getting hacked over and over again. Unbelievable. If you find a host pricing too good, be cautious.

Don't get stuck in marketing ploy (i.e.1tb of space /2 tb of bw for just 5.99/month). Do a search on google what people say about them and how long they have in business.

Good hosting companies don't require year long contracts. They can set you up in a few hours and cancel your service in 30 days with when you request it in writing.

Companies I've tried include NetNation, iWeb, Singlehop and the Planet. All have performed very well, though there was an electrical room explosion at the Planet a couple months back. While it was somewhat disruptive I think they did a pretty decent job handling it and gave us two months credit.

There's a ton of competition out there these days. Do your homework and I'm sure you'll find the right solution. Good luck!

In my opinion 1&1 is a great value. I recently was in Germany and drove by their facility and it is VERY impressive.

If you sign up and would like my referal link please let me know.

I use 1&1 and even though their UI is horrible for account management I've only noticed one time my sites were down in a year and a half (it was last March). Speed isn't that bad, my sites normally load up quickly and FTP access is a sinch.

And yes, their referral program is nice, too. A couple of referrals a year and you might have an entire year's worth of hosting paid for!
