Some interesting things I've read lately:
On different naming systems than TLDs:
This whole New.net movement sounds like such a good idea, but its also a little irksome to me. I think it causes more headache than solutions and freedom.
However if someday they somehow manage to get the ALT biz version of my ICANN biz name resolving globally, then we have problems.
Also (1) company "owning" vast quantities of name-space just is a non-starter. You think you've got problems with ICANN. The nightmare. What if their business goes defunct. Who would pick up where they left off. If another company buys them out will they honor the agreements. We'd all like a free market system with the DNS, but the realities are the DNS is more of a protected market (for a reason).
The internet is a global resource. Therefore management of it requires cooperation from governments. Is ICANN the answer?? The concept is. I am a little concerned at their ability to unilaterally make decisions which are of great importance---with very little imput. What I see happening is an over correction will occur down the road. Somehow we need to find a happy medium.
When you get into the concept of multiple TLDs, that makes investors wary. Contrary to popular opinion the internet cannot run by TLDs alone. It takes investment in that infrastructure, and in the businesses which use the TLDs. Therefore instead of making the internet more widely available. You would make it more expensive, as just a few would have to foot the bill. Donations, endowments, etc. I personally would cease my efforts in building the names I have and would go back to doing something offline. I would imagine a vast number of other individuals would do the same.
Just my .02.

Nice bump!
The older I get the stronger the realization is that 'things' change much slower than we think. As a species we are nothing if not adaptable but we only adapt when a benefit is derived. The internet is still in it's early days and real change will occur but it will occur slowly.
