Easiest way to create a classifieds site?

Hi all,

I have one domain name that I've been wondering what to do with for a while. It is a major city domain and it's my domain that gets the best type-in traffic by far. So far, I've just been parking it with Sedo - not like that makes a lot of money.

Anyway, what would be the EASIEST way for me to create a classifed site for this page? I want it to be similar to craigslist in content - all based in this city.

I don't have any real programming skills - I usually work with a designer and then can add pages as I need to, using what they've already created, with slight modifications. Or, I can pay them to do a few modifications/updates or whatever, as need be. I can't afford any 'big time' website designers, but have had success with a few different designers.

What script could I possibly use? Have any of you created a similar site? If so, please PM me, I"d love to get the link to check it out.

Any advice very welcome!
Thanks,
Christina

maybe check some open source sites for classified software, like http://sourceforge.net and install them onto some linux hosting account, let me know if you need any help with that

Re: Easiest way to create a classifieds site?

There are a lot of open source applications you can use to acheive a classified ads site... Open source usually means free but not always. One of the best places to look would be hotscripts.com for php scripts. However, as Manueld64 said, you will need linux hosting with mySQL databases to use it.

Some scripts will make classified ads sites very complex. Others will make simple sites. Decide what you need/want to do as far as running classified ads before you look for the software to do it. How you plan on running them will determine the best applications. For instance, paid advertising versus free. How do you want people to add their ads? These are the sort of things you need to think about.

Depending on what you pay for web design/development and the person's knowledge level, it shouldn't be terribly costly or difficult to hire someone to add the component(s).

How about letting us know what you wind up trying and how it goes, so we'll have a heads up in case we want to try a similar thing ? Btw, do you have any hosting that comes with Fantastico? Looks like there may be some options for this type of site, too, but I don't know anything about them.
