    Forum Software - recommendations

I have a crappo hosted forum on one of my sites but want to put the forum on my own domain. I'd also like the feature of the "autopost" where i can put adsense or whatever inside of the second post in a thread.

vBulletin looks great, but what about the install? I know no pho (or any programming for that matter), how long would it take one of my friends who knows what they are doing to install it?

    any other recommendations?

    Thanks,

    gmac

If you're looking for free, take a look at PHPBB. There's lots of hacks available such as the one you want and a ton of free skins available.

I prefer IPB, has a better admin panel and a very good WYSIWYG post box as well as some cool admin/mod features like inline editing (click on the title of a post in the topic list and edit it instantly).

There are advantages and disadvantages to both, i like vB better though, especially once you get a little used to its admin panel, lots of features to play with, just takes a little while to get used to it, but once you are used to it, there is nothing like it.

    Re: Forum Software - recommendations

I have a vb w/ 11k members and it runs like a champ. Just upgrading from 3 to 3.5 as 3.5 is awesome!

phpbb with 7100 members. It's ok but vb is better IMO. We are right now switching it over. In fact we switched it today but have not copied over the posts yet as there is a cms attached and we ahve to fix permissions.

ipb 3300 members but I am so used to vb that I am not a fan of the ipb. Plus it is old 1.3.1

SMF 100 members - I like this second to vb. I am using it because it is a smf forum about smf so ummm yeah have to use it lol.

    Re: Forum Software - recommendations

PHPbb is good but there has been a number of vulnerabilities (at least 2 to my knowledge) and many hacked/defaced forum sites. I would be curious to know how many vulns have been recorded to date for vb & others.
I would rather pay and be secure. This is not to say free software is not secure, far from it.

    Re: Forum Software - recommendations

use VB and phpbb on pretty large forums.

VB has great moderating features, which phpbb lacks.

like it has been said in other threads you can start with one of the free forum scripts and then convert to say VB.
i'm looking for resume related domains please pm me.
