Forums - are they worth it?

Would like to hear from those that have developed forums.

What is your favorite forum software?
Have you been able to make your forum profitable?
Does your forum require too much of your time?
What amount of Bandwidth has your forum required?

I've integrated www.XForum.NET to my existing online portal www.needguide.com to provide a complate set of portal site. I don't intend to make money on this particular site that I've monitor/managed for almost 4 years already.

It's nice to help and provide information for free. Once in a while, I request members/visitors to contribute via paypal. That will happen only if we need to fund new projects.

Going back to Forum, this will give you additional traffic, visitors and possibly clients but NOT to expect to earn from it.
