I've just recently switched over to vBulletin from SMF and haven't tested this yet. I would like to hear what you find out.
I do know that GoDaddy has issues with SMF's emailing system. Which is one of my reasons for switching to vB.
What Acro said,... and more.
A couple of things you likely will need to consider is the setting up of SPF records, and certain requirements to make sure your outbound emails dont end up looking like spam.
Some isp's and some email service providers like hotmail, aol, etc, require some additional hoop-jumping to keep you whitelisted on their systems.
It can be confusing, but once you are setup, you are setup.
(spf records setup in cpanel also)
