I am partners in a vB forum and no problems with software, etc. I would be interested to know what faults or shortcomings you are finding with vB. VBulletin seems to be the gold standard among most successful forums.
Also curious....I have seen a few forums 'fail' (in the domain industry) and IMO the main reason was they tried other Forum software that the "customers" were not used to. Many had that complaint posted by members and were just ignored.
Just my 2 cents, I think people like to log on to a forum they are comfortable with the format and user interface. We are starting another forum in a non related field where there are "no" forums currently so might not be an issue to try something different.
It looks pretty slick.

I looked into Xenforo last year...there was talk they were holding back on a "real" product due to threats of law suits from VB. Has that been solved?

looks nice in web2.0 coat, priced less than vbulletin and IP.Board, but... It needs some time, and it will beat vB easily, but now, I would take vB.

I used to be a big fan of paid forum scripts, but recently i've been using mybb. This summer I plant to customize it completely.
