Most will be JPEG but also RAW images. The plan is to have them in thumbnails and when clicked they will be viewable in full size.
These will be available to public viewing.
Also, because many are quite large and spectacular, I am going to allow free use (with a link back) or the images.
I know Joomla has many image extensions. I am sure Wordpress does as well.
Can someone point me to tried and true and trusted plugins to accomplish this task?
I would like to see some image galleries in using these plugins/extensions.
Functionality is a must.

I seem to recall some nice looking templates set up for photo galleries.
PaleoDirectory.com - Paleo, Primal, and alternative health, fitness and diet resources.
I like WP best.

That's something simple, although I use the plugin in combo with dev work (don't know what you are doing yet).
As far as full blown photo gallery, JoomGallery is pretty good and has the pop up functionality of Ninja Shadow box.

Hopefully this will show up in full size.
I would like a much smaller size on the gallery but open up to the full sized image.
Because the image will be full sized, it is ideal for people to use all or part of it.
Imagine a background of a site featuring a nice subdued blown up image of a peony.
this is just an example I have.
I also intend to display some of my artwork here.
Hey Doc,
NextGen Gallery for Wordpress can do the job.
Also, the latest versions of WP have the click thumbnail functionality built in.
