I am building a new sports site right now(specialized one sport only) targeting more of Indian traffic. In my quest to select a good domain i took a a good 5 letter .com and an exact relevant .in domain for my site. Now question is which to select as the top level domain for the site and which to add as an addon domain.
While .in is obvious, from my experience most of the people type.com when they do a type in(and especially from India). The .com equivalent domain is going to a parked page and i am fearing that i will lose traffic to that guy if i were to use it. (even though the major traffic will still be from organic google search, as time goes on, by the word of mouth publicity, people will come direct and thats a problem area) I can't buy the .com domain as the person is charging an astronomical sum for it(its a premium domain)
Now that leaves .com. The biggest problem here is(like any other field) that the good ones are gone. I still found a good name(which has some meaning to it) but the domain keyword is not exactly relevant to the site am building(which is more of a community while the keyword in .com domain talks of statistics). So thats the dilemma.
What i am really interested to know is what would be your approach vis-a-vis non .com domains. Is it better to build a brand around .com or .in is sufficiently on the rise to take the plunge as the main domain. The best ofcourse would be taking same .com, .in which would take care of problems either way, but thats not possible in this case.
Any opinions (and sorry about alluding to the site, i want to protect the main niche area, atleast till i launch)
