Need some advice. Using CMS or develop from Scrath ?

Hi,
I and my partner have a plan to make a business buy/sell website . At first ,we had a deal with web design firm to develop it for us . They suggest us to use custom built website not CMS system becuase CMS is hard to tweak ,adjust. And their developers prefer custom built.

But right now, they backed out. So I and my partner will develop this website by our own hands. We both graduated from computer engineering and we but web development experience is not good. Should I build a website from scrath or using CMS ? If CMS , which CMS should I use ?
The website I plan to develop is like this one " www.acquireo.com" But far smaller.

Hey "CMS is hard to tweak" God then those fellows don't know how to code I guess. CMS are built in a way that easy to tweak and fast development.

Bro use Joomla or Drupal for the development. Very easy and fast. If you code from scratch use PHPCAKE frame work. Could develop sites in days.

But a site you are making could be built using Wordpress also.

Don't think hard, Think little first. Take a CMS and try to get to basics like loggin and stuff.. Follow up adding components and finally you can build a nice site..

Cheers !

Your best solution is Joomla (joomla.org) coupled with a real estate add-on (either free or commercial). You'd be up and running in less than a half-day!

Wordpress is good for blogs, but if you get any serious traffic, WP just can't seem to handle it (ask anyone over at digg.com!).

wordpress is great for those that don't like to muck around, don't need full control of ads, user permissions, don't know php etc. postnuke is the one with the best security and best control of everything. wordpress also has too many updates - so if you have lots of modifications that can be a pain with each new upgrade.

postnuke is about to be rebranded and released to world, which will take notice - and you heard it here first. The last release has been stable and secure since nov 2006! How many cms packages can claim that? Set it and forget it baby!

Some examples:
http://das.utah.gov/main/
http://csu.qc.ca/
http://www.nymf.org/

I use them both - wordpress is best for quick and dirty websites, blogs and article/news websites. postnuke is much better for full-service websites, but is not for first time users to a cms as it can overwhelm new users.

I would recommend joomla. There are crap loads of themes and extentions and I am sure you can modify it to what you need.

If you are going to develop your own cms then look into php framework such as zend framework or http://codeigniter.com/.

Either try to find an existing solution for your business needs, or build it on top of mature and reliable CMS. If you have sufficient time then learn Drupal or Wordpress internals, or just outsource development to freelancers with good reputation.

I don't recommend going on with Joomla, its codebase is a nightmare.

I sell a packaged joomla CMS to my clients because of the ease of use .

The configuration can be a bit tricky, but once you get the hang of it you are up and running in a matter of hours.

Steps. choose a design

Have it configured

Get some training.

All up one week, and you are an expert.
