Here is a pretty good article about the various types of redirects.
Maybe it will help you.

I'm working on my first forum and all is going well but I right now the forum is accessible by going to www.domain.com/phpBB3/
I need to change this so the forum is accessible by going to www.domain.com and not having to throw on the extension at the end
So I have a few options that I can think of, neither of which I want to do - I can start from scratch and reupload the forum so that it does not have the phpBB3 directory or I can make a splash page on www.domain.com that has an enter the forum link that will point to the phpBB3 directory
I know there is another way and should be something I can do to make www.domain.com automatically redirect to www.domain.com/phpBB3/
Help me out here guys, there's got to be a simple way to do this!
Thanks,
-$ideline

Using your FTP program:
Download the phpbb3/ folder to a local drive.
Then, go into the folder and upload everything in the folder to the root of the directory.
Leave both active for now.
Then, go into the admin panel and change the directory form domain.com/phpBB3/ to domain.com/
Test - go though several threads and subforums to make sure it doesn't go back to the /phpbb3/ folder. When you are sure it won't - delete the phobb3/ folder.

Ya I figured I would have to pull all the files off and reupload them again to the root directory... I guess its the best way to do it in the long run, just gonna take a while
Yep - and I've done it a couple of times.

It would be easy to just redirect the main domain to the forum but frankly speaking, having a front landing page is not a bad idea. It would serve you better if your looking to expand your website to not just into a simple forum but maybe other additional stuffs like articles and blog sections.
Ya that's true but the site is purely a forum
well the domain has the word forum in it...
So does DNF.. and they're rockin' the landing page now too. Expansion my friend.
True true, I shouldn't limit the possibilities!
You can move the files from your server as well.
