Thumbs down RackSpace.com < --- - -- - - the most sucking host there is, even worse

I cannot believe the most expensive host offers the worst service I've ever seen.
I can't believe it. I cancelled my contract with them.
Wasted time and wasted money.
Worst experience ever.
Watch out.

They have just posted a fraudulent charge on my credit card account.

They messed up my server so bad when I was with them... cant even begin to tell you how much $$$$$ in losses they did for me....

And all the kings horses and all the kings men couldnt put my server back again..

When the time comes for you guys to go dedicated, DO NOT USE RACKSPACE.

Re: RackSpace.com < --- - -- - - the most sucking host there is, even worse

I wish someone had told me before I went with them too. They are undoubtedly the worst hosting company around. I now have 700gb of transfer for $350 per month and $114 each additional 700gb and it is burstable. If anyone is interested, you can go to http://www.helpdeskgenius.com. This is not advertising and this is not my site, nor do I get a referral commission, this is just my way of helping out other webmasters who have been screwed by Rackspace.

The Planet Or Server Matrix. EV1 is another option.

My next move (read: dreaded) will possibly be to Hurricane Electric http://www.he.com

Not with them now though.
ev1 is my server hotel for the time being.
So far I'd give them an 8/10
Some (very very few, albeit small) po'd network admins block them though due to their apparently hosting spammers. But the spammers should be gone, they did a big cleanup recently.

Their support is actually halfway decent too. Plus they have an open forum.
Rare issues with their dns configuration. Also, no wildcard ip's (wish I knew THAT beforehand).

Stay away from ImHosted.com I beg of you!
And being #1 in google for "rackspace sucks" goes to show you I dont like them either.

Good luck and do your diligence!

What is a 'wildcard ip'. Never heard this term before.

Re: RackSpace.com < --- - -- - - the most sucking host there is, even worse

My experience with Rackspace was excellent. The server was always up, the tech support was excellent, and yeah, I paid a little more, but it was worth it for the level of service I got. I would have no trouble whatsoever referring others there.

Re: RackSpace.com < --- - -- - - the most sucking host there is, even worse

I'm using both ServerMatrix and ev1. Considering another server but haven't gotten my stuff cleaned up enough to evaluate my current hardware.

If you consider ServerMatrix, be sure to check on WebHostingTalk as they post sales about 2 times per month there. The SM sales team won't publicize the WHT deals if you contact them directly. I've had good results from both companies.

I do recommend spending another $150 with a good server admin to secure the server immediately after you rent it. (Unless you can do it yourself.) They will remove unnecessary packages and accounts, install a firewall, etc.

I was with The Planet and was very disatisified with their lack of support etc...etc...

I am now with managed.com, and so far they have been GREAT.

It allows you to set your subdomains at the cpanel level and forget about it.
With ev1's setup, you need to go to their site and add an a record to your dns entries for that domain if you want to create subdomains.
In short, it prevents you from using automated scripts to distribute subdomains off your domains and not need to interact with it using your hand. (You can use the scripts, but need to physically enter all subdomains one at a time into ev1's nameserver config before they will resolve.

It's nice being able to create *.*.yourdomainormine.com on the fly.
At ev1, its a little bit of a hassle.

Hope that clears it up a little.
Note that this is an incomplete writing on the topic, as there are more points to point out, more advantages as well as more disadvantages. However, that is beyond my scope here.

Ah, ok, that is what I call wildcard DNS records. With a dedicated server, you could run your own dns server, and script that.

Closest thing I could think of the would fit a wilcard ip, was a multicast adress , lol.

Re: RackSpace.com < --- - -- - - the most sucking host there is, even worse

Thats right... wildcard DNS. Thats what I meant to say.

Yea I'm dedicated, guess I can do away with their nameservers.
Just set up nameservers for my box.

I havent needed to set up a subdomain script as of yet. Though I plan to.
Think actually when the time is right to set up that script, I would do it on a new box. Dont think I want any bum off the street signing up for links to my server and possibly spamming or otherwise risk it.

It's just one more thing that isnt set up for you when they deliver the server.
Thats one disadvantage going into it on your own, unmanaged.
Managed servers are nice because you pay for a tech to do it. Unmanaged are nice because once your out of the gate with it, you pay a tech THAT YOU KNOW AND TRUST a few times to go in and configure it for you (or do it yourself) and then there's really no more fees as far as that.

Rackspace sucks because their techs put blame on each other.
They all disagree with each other. Only one or two really impressed me. They have a few brilliant techs there. Others are outright dangerous with their stupidity and lack of knowledge or enough experience.

But, Bob Vila hosts there so its gotta be good, right?

Re: RackSpace.com < --- - -- - - the most sucking host there is, even worse

Speaking of Wildcard DNS, how do these sites like Afternic handle their DNS? I can't imagine that they enter DNS records for all of the domains that point to their nameservers? They must have a program that processes all of their "lame nameserver" calls and turns out their generic Afternic parking page. Anyone know if there's a script that will handle that, for us to install on our own servers?
