Web hosting: Linux or Windows ?

Have to decide wich platform use for a long term project.

Which platform is more stable and convenient, Linux or Windows (ASP) ??

and why? (if you have a bit of time to give a few reasons).

    Thank you very much,
    Attilio

I've always used Linux for web Hosting due to the (less) chance of script kiddies getting into your box if you secure them properly.
Also the fact you wont have to pay Microsofr any license fees!

This is also in the wrong section, moving to the web hosting forum!

    dont even think about windows.
Go for Linux. You'll get PHP/MySQL, supper user base support, excellent pricing and reliable performance.
And If you really need ASP, you can install chilisoft ASP (for a price).
Quite simply, its cheaper, and IMHO better!

I would definitely recommend Linux. Soon, Apache and the internet will be one. Even Apple has migrated to unix (as of OSX). As usual, Microslop is playing catchup!

Isn't it interesting how thay are always behind the curve on developing technologies? A few examples? GUI, Quicktime, Realaudio, Javascript, Firewire, Windows servers.

They try hard to imitate, but rarely come close to the original.

I agree with everyone else. You should go with Linux. When it comes down to it, stability and reliability are everything. Windows can't stand up next to linux.

FreeBSD all the way (and NO, it's NOT Linux, for anyone wondering).

FreeBSD is rock solid and a great OS for servers. I'd take it over Linux any day... Unless I want to run the OS on a home machine.

    And what about .net?

No one has come close to the technology imo

    I like MS

I just don't like Misrosoft's monopolistic practices, and their sloppy programming. Yeah, it works, but sort of like riding a bicycle with one leg, LOL!

Seems like they often let everyone else invent technology, then they create an inferior clone of it and force all the windows users to accept it.

Here's a great example- Quicktime. Apples amazing video codec was years ahed of it's time. Then MS introduced the wretched Windows Media Player. So..... because of owning 92% of the market, what became the standard? (hint- it WASN'T Quicktime)
