What is the law about using images?

Do I have to actually take the photograph myself to use it? Or can I find images via Google Images, upload them, then host them on my site?

Any help on this would be appreciated, I don't want to get in trouble for using any images.

I would suggest either taking them yourself or licensing them through a microstock agency like iStockPhoto.com.

Definitely do not just steal them from Google Images... can mean big trouble for you when you are caught by the copyright holder.

I want images of poker players. I don't think there are many micro stock companies who keep images of poker players on file.

I also don't have the kind of budget to go hunting all of these guys down.

So what else can I do?

How do I know if a specific image is copyrighted?

Try wikipedia.
many of them are under General Public License or Creative Commons.
Start with poker and you may find some pics you can use
