    Question Wordpress help and suggestions.

I am working on a new site, flu dot travel.

I am going to dev this as a spot for travel restrictions, precautions, prevention and spread of flu.

I am relatively new to working with wordpress but I love it.

What plugins should I be looking for?

I want to have live feeds from official agencies, google pandemic map, some adsense stuff, perhaps drop in a few ads or banners. It is not going to be set up as a commercial site (meaning I don't want peeps to have to wade through ads to get to the meat.

How about live updates? Like cron???

    Also, a plugin for multi-lingual?

If folks could chime in and tell me where to find this stuff and perhaps how to use it, perhaps links of yours will be added (wink wink )

    Hi Doc,
For the adsense placement, I recommend the Easy Adsenser plugin:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/easy-adsenser/
I use that one on all of my wordpress sites that i'm trying to monetize, it's really flexible and allows you to choose the placement of the adsense ads.
You also might wanna get the Google Analyticator plugin:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/...-analyticator/
If you are using Google analytics to track visitors, this one makes implimenting the code real easy.

Also, while you're at it you might want to get the all in one SEO pack:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/...-one-seo-pack/
This one allows simple modification of site description, meta tags, title, etc. etc.

I was able to find a translator plugin, however I have never used it, so I am unable to vouch for its performance:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/global-translator/

Please feel free to hit me up via PM if you have any other WP questions,

    OWWWEEEEEEE!

    Schweeeeeeeeeeeet!

All in one SEO I knew about but THANKS for the others.

I could spend all day looking and searching but would like to focus on those that are used rather than listed. Some categories have hundreds to select from.

All in one SEO pack is good but for AdSense, if you're even as low end of a programmer as I am, after you get your site up I'd say back it up localy on your PC and then add in the AdSense code yourself, I wouldn't be surprised that some of these "plugins" occasionally display their own code.

Make sure Akismet (with any install of WP) is active - it's a good spam filter for comments.

Also - be a little sneaky - change the built in search bar to a Gogle searchbar with your AdSense code.

Yep, all the mentioned ones are good. Akismet is very valuable for spam stopping. All in one SEO (or even Platinum SEO, they say it's better) is something I regularly use. Get also Google Sitemap Generator, very useful for Wordpress.
I've recently used Global Translator on a blog I've just sold (flowerarranginghobby.com), it works quite well.

Cool! I was going to ask about the spam issue.

DNhop dot com is getting a tremendous amount of spam comments that I have to manually delete.

I hope to be serious about wordpress.

I find it infinitely easier than Joomla although I love Joomla. Such a workhorse!

Mashable.com is also a great source.

Mashable is great site. The advantage(regarding wordpress) yoast has is that it is fully dedicated to wordpress

Thanks every one. Keep the suggestions coming.

I really need to dive into this wordpress thing. Love it.

I think I need to refocus may attention back to my core businesses.

A very real possibility that I may be getting rid of 4000 names or so. Have to get this under control and get back to site building, development and learning. I have about 50 brand new books and trade journals that I have not even looked at. So easily distracted with all out other interests - therapy dog training, fruits and berry farming, old home restoration.

No end in sight so I need to create the end so I actually know when I am finished.

its quite obvious if you need a live feeds, google tools etc, all could be found in the plugin exts. Moreover, the wordpress forum is a much easier way to get things work even faster =)

Question about these ad placement add-ons - do they work with customized themes?

Also Doc - WP is very easy and great to get started, the only drawback is that you're limited on a lot of things (but I'm sure hacks can help out with that). It is very siimple and a very fast way to get a site up in minutes with almost no programming / setup.

Joomla and Drupal are more for web designers and require a lot of knowledge to get going (Drupal more than Joomla) but they also give you a lot of freedom on what you can do with them.
