I've always been #1... domains I've registered have always been for sites I've been running for a while in a subdirectory of another domain.

Both 1 and 2, depending on what I'm up to.

Sometimes you'll have a name using #2, develop a site, and then seek out related names to catch traffic, so those additional names count as #1.

#1 for us - A good name is fantastic, but for the most part, success is a function of marketing and a sound business plan/model - a good name doesn't guarantee success.

    #2 for me.

But it's like writing a song.

Sometimes you come up with a great melody first,
sometimes the lyrics just pop into your head and you go
    from there.

    Good question.

    Hahahah Duke!

#1 is the "correct" way, the logical and more cost-effective and time efficient way... it is a planners way.

But most of US is way #2, the impulsive, opportunistic, idea-popping, light bulb lighting sort of way...

    Oh... Duke!

#1. But then I found I was getting a lot of traffic looking for something a little bit different than what I had in mind, so I re-adjusted the focus of the site to take advantage of it.

Also #2, but the #2 names I grab are always in my areas of interest.

Since I am a women.... it depends on the following:

    -Time of month
    -day of week
    -time of day
-Any brilliant idea I had in a fleeting moment, only to buy 6 other related domains and decide I don't want to any more.

    So I'm pretty much both.
