Best way to monetize 404 Errors

We are generating thousands of 404 's a day. WHat is the best way to monetized that?

Put up an htaccess redirect to the index page with your affiliate programs there, or possibly forward to a different website in the same general category.

Technically an actual 404 error page is the recommended and correct process and a link to a different poge there. That is the proper and courteous way to do it. From there they may next go to a new page after being notified of the error. The first method may get more traffic and is the quick and dirty way to do it but is considered non-courteous by some webmasters.

It is an image Hosting site, so when a "bad" image is deleted you get the error. Right is says that the image u seek has been deleted. Would you keep that and then in a second or 2 send them to the affiliate link/site? Or just send them there dirfectly?

That's a nice idea. We have also been thinking of some ways to profit from 404. But, I believe that the best and courteous way is to tell visitors that the page they are looking for is no longer found or has been moved. Then they can be provided with links to the main site. It is also good if you put in a short description of your company in there. Put your logo if you want (brand awareness).

Or you can tell visitors to contact you and you will try your best to assist them in finding what they need. This will be an opportunity for proactive marketing later.

It is my undertanding that you cannot use adsense in error pages.

If that is not true, that opens many possibilities.

"Ad Placement
Up to three ad units may be displayed on each Web site page, but no ad unit shall contain any advertisement in common with any other ad unit. Serving two or more identical ads on a single page constitutes double-serving, which Google does not support.
A maximum of two Google AdSense for search boxes may be placed on a page.

Ok, here is the Rules straight from G. It specfically says NO error pages.

htaccess forward is not an error page, the place you forward is legit page and google can then serve appropriate content

google wants content pages basically, how they get there, well there are no real rules, unless Google has strictly said 404 traffic can't be forwarded to real content

someone was going to such a site for specific content, as long as you forward them to a similar themed site, I don't see any big deal, it clears up your error log, who cares what some geek said about 404 from non commercial days, you got to pay the BW bills right, you don't have a free server do you?
