Depends on your traffic. Some kinds of traffic are easier to monetize, such as adult. If you are looking to monetize adult, hit me up via PM and I will let you know what I recommend.

    Agree with DaddyHalbucks.

    Too general of a question.

Would indeed depend on the domain and the traffic.

If you build sites yourself (or have them built) options are unlimited.

You can sign up for individual affilitates.

You can sign up with CJ (Commission Junction) or LinkShare who has perhaps the Who's Who of affiliate programs like Apple, MacIntosh, MS, and countless other products. Most big boy's of the internet don't mess with affiliates on a one-on-one basis any more.

The downside to CJ and Linkshare is countless emails about new programs, dead links, booted out vendors, and term changes with the advertisers.

I personally like adsense and Amazon for links on my sites. But I will use CJ and Linkshare.

But I really like building my own sites for the simple reason that I can try and use them all on one site...AdSense, LinkShare, Amazon, and CJ and anyone else that comes along.

Ad placement, size, positioning and such make a huge impact on monitization.

Amazon is perhaps the easiest to use, regarding an interface to keep up with sales, reach, and success of each ad. Plus, Amazon is not just books and so easy to keep up with. Rather than a different price structure for each product and vendor, it is pretty cut and dry...until you reach a certain level of sales, you get 5% of the value sold. No guess work at all, everything is very clear and concise, and straight forward. And they have some great widgets available for use.

Most of all, their customer support and service is pretty hard to beat.

So, those are pretty general statements to your pretty general question but I hope it helps get you started in the right direction.

    Good luck and welcome.

Depends entirely on the traffic, the domain you're using, and the offer yolu're putting to it.
Clearly, people are not going to go to cutestpuppies.com and purchase basket ball shoes.

Do you perhaps mean "best affiliate network"?
If so, once again, it depends entirely.

Not meaning to toot my own horn, but the lot I throw in with are pretty damn good for domainers that happen to have entertainment media and P2P related domains.
We've got one guy who's got a typo of Pirate Bay's domain, and is, amazingly, pulling in a grand a day from that little nugget alone.

There ARE issues with some guys being con artists, or merely a 3rd party pooling offers from other networks, getting a good payout terms due to the high volume of traffic "they're sending", when really they're just doing arbitrage on your traffic to the network.
Doesn't happen often, but it does happen.
YOU have to do due diligence.
Talk to people, do some studies online.
And looking up negatively loaded words in context with the network's not going to do you much good. You'll inevitably find a few dozen posts from angry schmucks who tried to cheat the system and got their arses kicked off and claim they're owed thousands of dollars... Maybe if the traffic hadn't been fraudulent, they would be.

Jump right in and actually just do it. The only thing you're wasting is time, and even then, it's a learning experience.
Go to a site like Affspy or AffiliateSeeking and look for terms that match some of the domains you have at your disposal. Join ALL of the networks that have offers that are relevant and seem legitimate, because you don't want to put all your eggs in one basket.
You may also want to join an affiliate marketing forum. I think Lord Brar will back me up on the recommendation of WickedFire, although you have to a) do a bit of research and experimentation first, as people aren't going to do anything for you if you won't even bother to do it for yourself; b) ask specific questions because people hate having to write long winded posts like this one because the people that ask them are generally looking f0or a turn key solution and won't bother reading something this long; and c) not have issues with being redirected to gay porn that hijacks your mouse.

DO NOT PUT ADS ON A LANDING PAGE!
Not only does this kind of piss off advertisers that may randomly check your pages, you're also giving YOUR traffic an easy way off of your site for the sake of a few cents.
If you are going to put ads on there, make sure it's an ad for another one of your own landing pages. This is a surprisingly effective technique. Especially if you make the ad block look like an AdWords block.

As far as creating the landing pages, seeing as it's obviously not your forte, go to a site like Digitalpoint, and get some Indian slave labour to make the pages for you. Make sure you correct their terrible English when they're done.
If you want it to be a site you can continue to update, specify the CMS you want them to use, i.e. Wordpress.

HarveyJ has excellent advice, I'd recommend following all of his recommendations. I used to make a reasonable living just domaining, but am now pulling in $xx,xxx per month doing affiliate marketing. I'm happy to help you out, just shoot me a PM.

Seeking advice for newbie at monetizing via affiliate ads

Am looking to build my own sites also to improve ROI.

    Appreciate any tips as to:

    1) Where i may get some starting templates that are easy to modify

    2) In addition to original content authored by me, include rss feeds that are relevant for 'news' and other useful RSS derived info; would like to offer amazon, linkshare, cj, clickbank, adsense

    3) Am particularly interested in any scripts for analyzing / scraping adwords listing of frequency of search terms, and allied searches for different keywords for 'related searches' prospects and

    4) Listing of adword auction prices (historic, current)

Thanks, in advance for your help here, or privately.

I'm not here to make friends. I have a social circle for that. We go out and drink, shoot pool and watch terrible movies.
I'm here to keep an eye on business. If I offend you then I assume we're not going to do business. Too bad.

As for my comment, precisely what else do you call paying someone $2.50USD per hour than slave labour? Because that's what the Indian guys on Digitalpoint will charge.
And no, I'm not being a racist. This is backed up by the fact that Indians at DigitalPoint work for less than a cup of coffee here.
It's a valid point, it's backed up by fact and actual happenstance.
I may express it colourfully, but it's called "having a sense of humour".

And if you pay attention to what's being said, instead of who's saying it, you may learn something.

No one said you are a 'Racist.' You need not validate your 'sense of humor.'

I hold your views in high esteem.

You are an asset to DNF.

Some great tips here - I myself am absolutely tired of parking and even adsense of late. I would love to get more advice no how people here are actually making a decent living as affiliates.

PM me if you have any info that can help me - I've about 400 domains sitting in sedo right now.
