Sedo Verterans - Is this a typical offer from sedo?

Thanks in advance for reading my post.

Pretty simple - I put a domain up for sale at sedo and within hours started getting views. Then I got an email - but not from sedo - simply asking what is my price. I'm sure they got my info from my WHOIS, but thats not my concern here.

My question is - is this typical? Do buyers (this one is obviously a reseller) often go outside of sedo to initiate a transaction?

And a follow up - how should I follow up? Send a reply email with my price? or ask them kindly to make an offer through sedo?

Thanks for helping a sedo noob.

It's quite typical to get solicitations (and spam) outside of sedo for domains; some are legitimate, genuine inquiries that aim to find out whether you're selling or what your asking price is. Point them to sedo's page for that domain asking them to place an offer there. What you gain is that they have to register and authenticate themselves, you'll have a geolocation on them and you weed out the spammers.

Same for eBay. I received an email this morning asking for a price on a domain I have listed there. I simply pointed to the auction in a reply.

Ok, so I got a response. I replied with a simple link to my sedo page with the domain.

    The email is from:

    Derek Sanderson
    Vice President
    Elite Capital Investment Group
    sanderson@eliteinvestment.net

Suddenly I'd remembered a few threads I'd already read...

Like some mention, I too have been buying domain names for quite some time, since 2002. Although I'm still quite new to DNF & sedo. The difference may be that I only developed from 2002 until earlier this year.

The email templates remain the same:

    Email #1:
    Code:
    Hello,

Your domain name has been found online.

Please let us know your price.

We make money on selling and buying names and sites. Now the domain
    business is very attractive.

Looking forward to do business with you.

    Email #2:

    Code:
Do you sell domain with a web site or just the name?

Domain without content is ok with me. Web site is not necessary.

Have you had your domain names evaluated in the past? I mean domain
appraisals. Without valuation we cannot be sure in the sale price. It's very
important for me in terms of reselling too. But we must engage a valuation
company with REAL manual service. So I will only accept valuations from
independent sources I and my partners trust.

To avoid mistakes I asked domain experts about reputable appraisal
    companies.

Please check this blog with suggestions from other sellers and buyers:

    http://webtalk.007sites.com/Archive/437219.htm

If, for example, the valuation comes higher you can adjust your asking price
accordingly. It will be fair. I also hope you can give me 12% - 15%
    discount.

After you send me the valuation via email (usually it takes 1-2 days to
obtain it) we'll continue our negotiations.

What is your preferred payment method: Escrow.com, International wire
    transfer, PayPal.com or something else?

Hope we can come to an agreement fast.

    Looking forward to your reply.
Anyway, be on the lookout for more from eliteinvestment.net, they're not done yet.

This a simply a dirty trick , they charge you for an 'assessment', you pay a fee and...goood bye.

This is what I got this week:

Yup I got that one too. I'm not receiving any more emails from them. I think they got the point when I told them their scam wasn't working.

Just as point of reference, I prefer to do deals outside of sedo at Escrow.com. (Everyone has their own opinion) So if I see a domain listed for sale at sedo I will try and find out the owner's data from whois and try to initiate a transaction through email/phone etc. Basically, not all offers are spam so just be careful.

I received a similar email, Googled "Elite Capital Investment Group" and found this post. It's obviously a scam.

The only difference with my email is that it says the VP of Elite Capital Investment Group is "Anthony Carter". They must have some pretty fast turnover in their company!

    The email I received...

That's what appraisal scammers do if they discover a new sedo member. That's also what happen to my officemate who's a new domainer and a new sedo member.

Could it be that Sedo and these scammers connive with each other? Hhhmmm
