The accident looked horrific. I think it was the flying object which hit his head which did more damage then the crash itself?

Definitely the object caused the main damage. The impact in to the wall was pretty tame compared some F1 crashes. Here's a big Robert Kubica crash from a few years ago - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_M3XLh1tV4A&NR=1
Did you see her helm? It was her life-saver.
Hopefully there is no permanent damage.
Seems like he had successful surgery for the skull fracture, left eye is still a point of concern
