Ump's bad call blows a perfect game.

    Before 2010 we've had 18 perfect games.

So far this year we've had two. Galarraga was on his way to being #3 for this year when veteran umpire Jim Joyce made a bad call with 2 outs in the 9th inning.

Forst of all, I have to admit, it's admirable to see he's standing up and admitting his mistake and not bad mouthing those who bad mouthed him. He clearly states he deserves it.

When umps call a forced base they use their eyes and ears. They watch for the runner's shoe to touch the bag before they hear the pop of the ball hitting the glove. I'm sure it was very loud and his angle, despite what he said, wasn't the best.

The call changed a perfect game (skipping a no hitter) to a regular shutout.

The question is - will MLB overturn the call and give Galarraga the perfect game?

It was painful to watch that on TV yesterday.. I can't see them overturning the call, that would open a huge can of worms. Looks like the end of the 'steroid era' in baseball is starting to give pitchers the edge in competition. As you said draggar, already this year a perfect game and at least one no hitter. Look at Ubaldo Jimenez of the Rockies, he's 10-1 with a .78 ERA and he threw one of the no hitters this year!! Best start by the numbers for any pitcher in history.

Incredibe numbers. As for no steroids giving pitchers an advantage - steriods only let batters hit the ball further - they still had to hit it (a strike out would have been a strike out with or without them) but it would help their ERA, OBP, etc.

They may adopt a policy like football where they do have access to instant replays to make a call right there on the spot, though - that would have resolved this then.

Just wish officials would start getting the calls right, in all sports! Instant replay is a pain in the ass and I've always believed that the first call should stand but it's been getting ridiculous and what happened yesterday was just embarrassing for MLB.

Close call even on the replay...ump should have manned up and said he made the call and that was it.....maybe the ball is not all the way in the glove before runner gets their, maybe his foot is not all the way down, got to admit their could be a little gap. So saying all that their is doubt so its a judgment call and the ump made it...nothing to be mad about its baseball I mean their is a non defined box we call the strike zone that the ump makes judgment calls on all day long.
