Better then GoDaddy but without spending more $?

Having gone through many hosters for dedicated Windows and Linux servers in the past years for different projects, I know how important it is to have a good hoster with actual space in a physical facility and not the thrid reseller down the line.

But for basic websites and forum hosting, the packages at places like GoDaddy seem enticing - the price and bandwidth options seem like a deal along with a quick support answer.

The problem is the answer is usually no - like the inability to run awstats. The do provide their own stats, but basic stats suck, and more details cost extra each month. $6.95 + $3 for stats - #9.95 per month. That makes them on par with many other hosters recomended here.

Is it possible to do better then GoDaddy and still pay the same or a few pennies difference?

Just general site hosting, reasonable amount of storage, multiple databases, LAMP, multiple domains. decent but not A class traffic or bandwidth. You know - reasonable and cheap - a good value.

Oh, and anyone reselling, thanks but I'll pass, but good luck with your business.

GoDaddy is among the worst hosting companies. Avoid them at all costs. Among the many problems with GoDaddy is no SSH, and a severe limit on FTP connections (you can't edit two live files at once, for example to copy and paste from one file to another).

For cheap hosting I recommend Site5. Go for a "multi hosting" account if they still offer them.
