All else being equal, (ie: same bandwidth, storage space, etc), what would be the main differences from a Cpanel/WHM reseller account VS a single cpanel account with unlimited add on domains?
Thanks in advance.
I currently have a Hostgator reseller account, Your question would be better answered by a host provider....Click this link and it will take you to Host Gator's live support....Good luck.

WHM is for controlling the server, cpanel is for controlling a domain.
Check out cpanel.net for more info.
So to those who have reseller accounts, do you ever find yourself needing to control the server?
More specifically, let's say I have xx number of sites, I could just host them on a single cpanel account with unlimited add-ons. What I want to know is, is it worth paying 3 or 4 times the monthly rate to get a reseller/whm account that facilatates creating individual cpanels for every site? Remember, I have no intention of setting up a webhosting/reselling site.
WHM is good if you want to make MX or DNS changes. Edit features and addons. Edit server settings [depends on root configuration though]. Install SSL. Being able to brand the cpanel.

On reseller account no, on dedicated, yes.
Basically if your root admin sets up the server correctly, there's no need for WHM besides making MX or DNS changes, SSL and etc.
WHM gives you the advantage for a couple of key reasons.
1. As mentioned above, WHM provides better access to features that cannot be controlled through cPanel such as DNS records.
2. Security is improved. If someone gains access to one website, it's a lot harder to get to numerous accounts than it is to break in through on website and have access to all websites.
3. Organization is a plus. Granted, you'll still have stats in the like in cPanel, but if you have WHM the sites have their own stat panels.
WHM would win out for me personally, but it's just that - a personal choice.

I have both types of accounts at Hostgator, and I'm completely fed up with WHM and am in fact looking for alternatives now, for those that I manage for my clients.
I had one account that went .18 over bandwidth limit and they put up an error message on her site. I went to WHM to try to see what was going on. To see bandwidth status, you don't go to one screen. You go to a bandwidth usage screen. Print it or write it all down, because this is going to take awhile. Then you go to list accounts. This tells you the domain, and the space quota (which they just call "quota" but it's the amount of space taken up on the hard drive.. or at least allocated). It also tells yo uwhich "package" is assigned to the account. You can't just change quotas for the account. (They don't call bandwidth a quota, even though that's what they're talking about. There's a space quota/allocation, and a bandwidth quota.. but they call the first one quota and the second one bandwidth.) It would be too simple to keep management all on one page... The next thing you have to do is go edit your package. Packages are named and essentially set the two quota amounts. But if you edit a package, guess what? It doesn't automatically reset the package that was assigned to the domain. You have to go back and do that by hand also. All among five screens. GRrrrr... Anybody have a better host with a better solution for managing accounts/quotas, than the deplorable WHM?!!!!

If you do this as a business, I wouldn't be caught dead with the power WHM adds to the process.
I assume you mean without the power of WHM.
I like the concept, but I can tell you from a couple years of use that it's really convoluted and I'm getting fed up with it, especially in that whole package, quota, bandwidth, reset package, go back and reset name to package, etc. nonsense. It needs a total overhaul and I'm wondering if there's a competitive product.

Well I can tell you that cPanel/WHM is the best of the bunch. I work with the other two large solutions out there - Plesk and DirectAdmin - and they both offer fewer features. WHM can be a bit annoying, but I've really not had that much trouble with it lately and especially with version 11. I don't really find an issue with the quota thing because it doesn't take that much time in the grand scheme of things.

Very interesting read this thread is.
Personally I find that the more control you have, the better.
As such, I find that WHM is better than cPanel alone. Especially so if you ever plan to sell any of your websites.

It's ALL Cpanel. What makes it WHM or regular Cpanel is the different levels of access and permissions. You don't have to resell space to use a reseller account. Many people use it to control multiple websites. A reseller account will give you more control over certain features. With single account, you don't have that control and might have to ask the hosting provider each time you want to enable something.
Both types of accounts you get a set number of bandwidth and space. Usually the reseller account is more.
Hi All,
Newbie question
Is there a "best" software program to use in conjuntion when advancing to a WHM set-up with Cpanel for multiple domains?
With the need for auto FTP uploading of multiple domains and such???
What software do you all use to manage multiple domains in a dedicated server enviornment?
Thanks in Advance
