dns failover

Anyone know if any registrars offers dns failover? I'm currently using a third party for my more critical websites due to the ability of the service to automatically point my names to another ip address if the primary server goes offline. A lot of registrars have dns servers included with their service, but wondering if anyone knows if any of them offer any failover/ monitoring service included?

Thanks!

Nameservers kick in, in order of entry. Just add more (valid) nameservers.

Thanks, but not really what I'm after. The secondary, tertiary, etc nameservers kick in if the first dns server is down. I'm looking for the dns server to change the ip address of the website/domain if it detects the site is down. Essentially a round robin system, except that rather than load balancing, only point to the secondary, etc when the primary webserver is in a state of failure.

Take a look here: http://www.dnsmadeeasy.com/s0306/prod/dnsfosm.html

I'd second DNS Made Easy, I'm using their Anycast service for all my core websites. Competitive packages. Depending on your gross volume (both revenue per visitor and impressions) you may want to get with a professional to talk about global load balancing for the best cost verse value solution.

Sincerely,

Justin

Thanks Justin, been using them for years. Was hoping someone might know if a registrar might offer some similar service so I could save some money

Scott,

We've set this up using DNS in two locations with a little bit of custom code to flip between the primary and secondary, retract the IP's at the downed location etc.

If you want to go with your own DNS solution to save costs, let me know and I'll share some code with you.
