    Post Host my own site

Can someone bring me up to speed on the pros, cons, and how-to's of Hosting a site on my own computer (using Apache, IIS, PWS or something like that)?

    Re: Host my own site

pete that's really a lot to discuss in one go... how would you like to do it? what are you running now on your computer? or are you going to set up a separate computer for this? How are the power outages in your area? and how much down time/slow time do you experience through your isp? matter of fact, are you broadband or dial-up? You might also need to check with your isp whether you can do that or not without getting into hot water. Some have hefty restrictions about what you can do even if you have a static IP.

We ran an irc chat server from home for awhile just to see whether it was something we wanted to deal with... ran it on IIS... but it was more trouble than it was worth on the machine where we set it up...the ups you can buy off the shelf don't last very long when they're being used to the extent the chat server was used. springtime sees a lot of power outages here and keeping the server updated and secure was a hassle but other than that it wasn't bad.

At the same time, with decent Hosting deals at under $8 a month, why would you bother? Leave it to the professionals, I say! (Just MHO).

    Re: Host my own site

well, it would just be a personal little site. maybe a blog and some other neat stuff. nothing big at all.
As for my system - I have broadband and run Win XP.
Like I say, it's not so big of a deal if there's a possibility of it being down from time to time. It's just going to be a small personal site.

    Re: Host my own site

if you give up sleep, a social life and any hope of ever seeing real people ever again you can do your own Hosting. or if you don't care if there is downtime when you're sleeping, having a social life or actually mingling with real live people, you could do it.

Beyond that the experience for the end user should be slow and frustrating unless the "server" is exclusive to your website. Otherwise everytime you do something that impacts your bandwidth on that box will make it even more slow and frustrating. WinXp with a cable connection isn't going to hack it if you want to cultivate some decent traffic to your site.

And the post above is the truest.. when you can get very decent hosting for (and i take liberty to edit) $5 a month, why even consider it?

    Re: Host my own site

Hosting a server in your own bedroom (or garage or basement) is a hobby only for hardcore geeks. It's NOT the best way to host a website. Even when you are well-versed in managing a server, you could and should do it remotely with facilities that are fire and quake-safe (not to say being ruined by a misbehaving cousin).
Profoundly influenced by #Bauhaus, @Nameslave unrepentantly embraces #Minimalism in his #multimedia portfolio. His early works include an experimental adaptation of Chekhov’s Cherry Orchard inspired at least partly by Robert Fripp. His totally irrelevant M.Ed. dissertation examines Organizational Culture and Change Management.
