DNF$: 112 Location: nc | It really depends on how busy the site will be, and different people have different definitions of busy. If you are going to have an average of 100 people online, you should be fine with 500GB/month. What will drive your bandwidth up a lot is if users are uploading pictures/videos and then sharing them on other sites - or if one such item gets really popular, such as promoted on digg which could send thousands of visitors to you. |

Country: | Depend on the traffic itself. If you are getting alot of hits, you can hit 1-2GB bandwidth a day.
If it is a busy site, you may also want look into getting a dedicated server instead. Shared web hosts may kick you if you use too much resource on their server.

DNF$: 3,209 Location: toronto | It's not so much the traffic that will slam you, but the RAM.
If you think you can get away with those $5 and $6 dollar a month plans..think again. The minute you start utilizing too many resources like CPU and ram. You will be kicked..
You will need a VPS plan or something similar to start |

If it is a huge and busy site, go for a dedicated server instead. You get to utilize the entire server for your site. No worry been kick or limit by vps's small resources.
If you do not know how to manage linux server, do make sure get a 3rd party server management to look after the server for you. They will take care of security patches, tweaks and other related server issues while you can concentrate on your site without worry.

Ridiculous numbers like that are just setting you up for trouble down the road when you actually try to use them.
You're going to have to spend a lot of money if you actually want to use 15TB of bandwidth a month. |

Country: | I'm familiar with the whole overselling shared hosting thing. I was on one for about 9 months before I upgraded to a dedicated server. Those numbers they're mentioning there are irrelevant. You'll never use that much without having a dedicated server. They'll throw you off and disable your site long before you're able to handle that much traffic.
Besides, if you're pushing that much traffic, it's assumed you would be able to afford a dedicated server anyways. When it comes to hosting, you get what you pay for -- and $7 won't get you a lot. |

I always laugh at these numbers. The same with anyone offering "unlimited bandwidth".
The throughput of a 100 Mbit network card will never allow you to consume 15 terabytes of traffic in a month. You'd have to be serving content at full server capacity, at which point as others mentioned you'd be saturating the server's resources. In fact, your visitors will witness timeouts and long loading times, especially with anything that is database-driven.
You need a dedicated server for something like that, with scalability options.

Country: | I'm co-owner of a forum/site which has just reached the 5 Million views a year mark. Although we aren't a social networking site we have the forum, an extensive photo gallery, a chatroom as well as regular news/content. Not a social networking site, but enough on there to give a reasonable comparison IMO.
We currently use a shared plan and we don't use anywhere near the 5TB monthly bandwidth allowance or the 500GB diskspace and although the company have been pretty helpful in moving us around to keep us on servers with lower load we are at the stage whereby we are starting to cause regular stress on the shared resources wherever they put us. So much so that we've had to make some compromises on the site to reduce load until we get a chance to switch to a dedicated server.
I've never been under any illusion with using shared hosts and always knew the day would come when we'd need to step up to dedicated server (despite never having used anything like the limits they say you have in terms of bandwidth and diskspace)....but as you can see, if your looking at 10,000 active members then your soon going to go well beyond what I use now and a shared host will simply not be able to cope with that.
Our current host offers scalable VPS, but by the time we ramp up everything we need to the level we need, we're cheaper going the fully dedicated route. |

DNF$: 496 Location: USA | dedicated is the way to go,but you must be also able to admin a server,or get a managed plan(they dont run by themselves). If you site is not making much $$$ and you have not much $$ you have no choice except shared hosting.
How much bandwidth depends on several factors ,ie. what type of files, ect, and what your site is coded in... |

Country: | Nowadays bandwith offers mean nothing (they could be unlimited). You need to know the number of connections and cpu usage your scripts will need. |
