    Hosting for media files.

I have a reseller account now with 80 gig bandwidth. I don't know if this is going to be enough for a media file section I would like to add to one of my sites. I don't care if the download speeds are slower than the rest of the site. I've also seen several sites put their media files under a sub-domain. Is this somehow pointed to a different server? Is there a host out that is inexpensive, and truly unlimited bandwidth with limits on speed? Can I host the media files on my own computer?

    Thanks

ImUnlisted, Unlimited bandwith does not exist. Some people say they have a server with unlimited bandwith but thats a marketing idea to get clients like you hosted with them.

It will be much better if you make a webserver from your computer and host those files. But for that, you will have to put your computer on 24 hours. The speeds will be slow but that will depend on your connection.

there is a thing as unmetered servers, and many datacenters do have them. What they do is capp your maximum port speed to somethign lets say 20MB/s, and give you unmetered bandwidth, that means you can use as much as you want, but at any given second your not gonna transfer over 20 MB, so if you need to transfer over 20MB/s its going to slow down connection, but it is unmetered, and thus unlimited.

Wrong! If it is capped at 20mbps, then you will get about 5.6TB bandwidth. So, assuming if you run your server at FULL maximum every second of the month, the maximum you can transfer is 5600G. I'm now looking for a 100mbps which is only about 26TB ish.

    unmetered does not equal unlimited.

Sounds like a semantics argument to me. If I rent a car with unlimited miles, it just means I won't be charged even if I drive non-stop and as fast as the car/police will allow. I'm not expecting the car to go unlimited speeds. It just means that there is no amount of miles I can put on the car that cause me to pay additional charges, and the car will not shut off after a certain distance. I understand that there are fast cars and slow cars, I'm looking at the slow ones right now.

This is exactly what I want for my media Hosting. I don't care if the user has a slow download speed. I'm giving them a mostly free site and if the media files are running slow, they can check back later. As it is a "free" site, I'm not looking at a large budget.

I have a good host now for my site, and since I'm not going to get the best host for my media files I don't want to host the site on the same server. Anyone know how I would go about having a sub-domain point to another server/host?

I welcome PMs with any offers.

    Re: Hosting for media files.

Dreamhost is a very good host

If you are on a fast connection, Got a spare box, i reccomend installing RedHat on it and running it as a webserver from home, it took me literally 30 minutes to get myne up and running, allthough its offline now as i use faster Hosting, Another alternative would maybe try and get sponsored hosts, also what nobody has asked, how much media are we talking about?
