The problem I started to have with GD is it seemed their shared servers were just really maxed out and over a few month period things just slowed down to a ridiculous point. I have been extremely happy with Host Gator since the move

Chuck - I am deciding between Host Gator and Bluemonster
It seems like after talking with them they offer the most knowledge , however
are they all just shared servers also ?

You can get a dedicated as well but for my use, it's a small site of my wifes, the shared works just fine and as far as speed is like night and day from what I experienced with GD.

I have heard both good and bad about Host Gator. Do not go with Site5 - they too have there servers overcrowded.

The main things you want to look for when researching a shared Hosting provider is what they allow or don't allow. Some hosting companies limit the number of files you can have per account, the size per file, the percentage of CPU and RAM you can have for a given amount of time. Read their AUP/TOS.

Do not fall for the "unlimited" plans for $5. No company can offer this and there are always catches. If you only have a few sites and do not care about uptime, speed, or performance, then these types of plans may fit your needs. They do this and stuff as many clients onto one box as they can which casuses downtime, slow response times and horrible performance.

The best thing to take into consideration is whether the host will allow you to upgrade to a larger plan in the future as your sites expand (most will), the uptime of the host (most post this information), test out their support response times (most sales response times are quick, but have others made comments about support response times?), read some reviews on WebhostingTalk (use your judgement as to which are telling the whole story)

So it all comes down to the type of account that is right for you. There are shared accounts, reseller accounts, vps servers, dedicated servers, and so on.
Shared - You have have access to one domains's control panel but can have add-on domains.
Reseller - You can create each domain with their own control panel
VPS/Dedicated - Unless you get a managed box, you are on your own with these in regards to updates, configuring, fixing issues, etc.

Control Panels - Plesk plans are going to be more expensive than cPanel/Directadmin/Webmin or most other control panels because of licensing. Plus, Plesk runs slower than the rest. The majority of the hosts will offer cPanel with or without RvSkins/Fantastico.
