how to install zend optimizer on virtual server?

Hopefully someone can give me some tips.

I'm presently on a shared/virtual dedicated server. The hosting provider's information initially said that zend was installed, however after I tried installing a script, I discovered that this was not the case - and upon contacting support, they apologized and said I'd have to install it myself.

Here's the situation, I've downloaded the zend optimizer package and am trying to follow the instructions. Turns out I can't access my server as root via ssh or ftp the file for security reasons. I can only logon to cpanel/whm using my root account.

A search through the internet digs up a number of hits, but all say I need the root access...

So how do I go about installing zend or am I SOL?

Thanks in advance.

The host needs to do it.

He does not know what he is talking about. If you are on a virtual server they control the software. Unless, you are on a VPS. I would state to him since his information stated it was installed they should provide you with the service of installing it for free.

Do you have a resellers account? That is what it sounds like you are describing above. If so there is no way for you to install Zend yourself and the network admin needs to do it under root.

Yes, this is a VPS, (they call it virtual dedicated, but same thing I think),
and I do have a root account, but this is rejected when using SSH. Only the cpanel manager takes my root password. I can ssh into it as my other users, but when I try "su" to root, this is also rejected.

Re: how to install zend optimizer on virtual server?

Zend optimizer is a plugin to php which allows a server to read zend encoded files as well as serve as a platform to install zend modules such as eaccelerator. The installation is incredibly simple thanks to zend's script. The current 10a version works with php 4.4.1 as well as the latest version of eaccelerator. Currently the cPanel scripts do NOT install a version of zend compatible with php 4.4.1 so a manual install must be done.

I have a local copy of the files:

cd /usr/local/src
wget http://www.eth0.us/files/ZendOptimiz...21-i386.tar.gz
tar -zxf ZendOptimizer-2.5.10a-linux-glibc21-i386.tar.gz
cd ZendOptimizer-2.5.10a-linux-glibc21-i386
./install

Now just hit enter a few times until it is done and you are done! It is as easy as that.

Check for a more recent version at http://www.zend.com/products/zend_optimizer

Another tutorial http://www.webhostgear.com/184.html

If all else ask your host of the VPS to install it for you.

You might want to ask the hosting how come you can't ssh in. Sometimes they change port number for security purposes.

Re: how to install zend optimizer on virtual server?

Success! thanks everyone. They disabled ssh logins by root for security purposes. And it turns out only one of my user accounts is part of something called a wheel group, allowed to "su" as root...
