An additional reasonably priced graphics program that has not been mentioned here, but which has most of the capabilities included in Photoshop is offered by Ulead. The progam, known as Photoimpact (newest version is 10), is delightfully easy to use for most newbies with even a SMALL amount of patience. In addition, the program comes with a substantial number of Web components that can be easily altered to produce nice looking banners, buttons, and logos (with a little bit of the user's imagination). I used Photoimpact to create the "official" banner for http://www.americatidol.com by choosing the color scheme I wanted (black and white with touches of red) and substituting a "kitty" font for some of the text in the original component. The result, which I am happy with, was a nice little piano keyboard with a variety of cat silhouettes stretched across the banner. The entire creation took less than 10 minutes to complete. In addition, there is another very nice Ulead program, GIF Animator, that works seamlessly with Photoimpact and can fairly easily be used to create even some fairly complex animations. The results can be exported into various formats, including Flash. On AmericatIdol.com, there is a white kitty at the top of the first page of the site who appears to be inside a TV screen and attempting to get out, as she makes a statement in writing to Simon Cowell, the "tough" American Idol judge. This little animation was created with Ulead's GIF animator. If anyone needs additional information about these programs or has any questions about them, please let me know and I will try to help you if I can.
And of course ... you can download fully working trial versions of either of these programs and in most cases I think that you'll find that you have a substantially long enough trial period during which you can create a banner or other web components and use them forever if you wish. I would just recommend that if you DO decide to give the Ulead software a try, download one or two programs at most, even though it is probably tempting to download all of the site's graphics programs to try at once. Trust me ... unless you are already a fairly advanced graphics designer (in which case you probably won't need this advice anyway!), you are unlikely to be able to enjoy any of the programs in a lot of depth without finding yourself running out of time to really enjoy your free trial periods. Ther programs really ARE that good, IMHO.
Have fun!
