I am at the final stage of the developemnt of a football betting/gambling portal and the coder has asked me to give him the meta tags.

Actually, your Meta tags are not as important as you think. You should still use good meta tags, but the most important thing is the relevence to the content. So make sure that you don't just throw in a bunch of keywords in your meta tags that are nowhere to be found in the site.

Do you already have copy done for the home page? Do you know what your top level navigation is? These things will go a long way to help determine what your keywords and description should be...

You'll need separate meta tags, titles, text and SE optimized html files (the name of the file) for each article / preview etc etc actually for each page on your website, so choose carefully, pick keywords that are not targeted yet (don't pick football for example because you won't get a chance)
