.info and .com are equally likely to make the front page on SERPs, as Google does not care about your extension when they generate or index for SERPs.

The fact that .INFO names have only recently really kicked off may attribute to that

Optimization and promotion would get any keyword domain to the top, regardless of TLD. Don't expect the .com owner to sit on their butt while you're hoping the .info will surpass it.
Prescisely, the .com owner already has the advantage of time and preplacement.

As an incentive, perhaps. I own several ORG and NET domains that rank higher than the COM equivalent. Bottom line: if ranking is what you want, you have to work for it.
yes, .net and .org (wikipedia) beat the .com, sometimes.
The reason why I posted this question is in some of the cases, the .info is the only one left when you try to register a hot domain name. That prompts me to think whether should I grab the .info or not.
Talking about "Optimization and promotion would get any keyword domain to the top, regardless of TLD." I reserved on this statment. At leaset for now, I never have the confidence, for instance, to say seo.info will beat seo.com by promoting.
Try google for word like dog, seo, domain, book... none of the top 10 SERP features a .info site
Finally saw one while google the term ".info"

A PR 8 site... Rank 4 for the keyword ".info"

This is a good question. I too would like to see any example of a .info tld that ranks within the top 10 of a google search. I've tried to search a little myself and can find no .info tlds in the list.
Anyone?
When we check the time they are on the market , info is the newcomer and generally taken when com,org and net has been taken ( no offence to .info owners).
This means that when someone has build a site before the .info one and has more backlinks , more age and a lot of other factors. At least for google the newcomer has to convince google that it is more worthy to rank before the old one and this means a lot of work.
But if all factors are the same google does not care about the tld , (of course local tlds may have some advantage when ranking localy.
I agree with most of what zangief said, but wanted to add these thoughts:
.info domains sell for 99 cents on GoDaddy. They are used on many black hat sites for that reason. Google looks at many different factors on Web sites and build "profiles" of site types. For example, hypothetical Factor A combined with Factor B but no Factor C means the site falls into Profile X.
Just don't combine the factors that would cause a search engine to mistake your site for a crap site. .info by itself might not raise a flag, but .info combined with "Factor A" might raise a flag.
Also .com, .net, and .org are sites are where you could expect to find a brand name. A company or organization called "Example" might be found at example.com, example.net, or example.org. You would probably not find a company called "Example" at example.info. I believe that is why .com, .net, and .org seem to have an advantage in Google for exact matches between the query and the domain name.
Here are some examples of .info domains that rank well:
Quality .info site with PR7: http://www.css3.info/
#1 for noam chomsky: http://www.chomsky.info/
First page of Google for los angeles http://lacounty.info/
Spain.info http://www.google.com/search?q=spain
alberteinstein.info: http://www.google.com/search?q=albert+einstein
More examples of strong .info sites here:

(not all of them are good ones, but there are a handful of well-ranking sites like catapults.info, anxietyinsights.info, etc.)

i'd like to support the first statement of webd.
the rate of the .info domain is leading to use it for many black hat kind of things and i have seen many of the people when they plan to build a proxy network they buy loads and loads of .infos and setup a network
