    Google crawlers and critique please

I have some questions about improving the position of our site on search engines. The site is the one in my link but I dont want to type it again as I dont want it to appear on search engines in this post.

I admit I have not spent much time optimising the site but would love a critique of what we could do to improve it. We have a strong domain name, I have removed images to replace with text and have some basis meta tags.

    1. Linking to other sites is not an option as it does not fit with our model so does this mess up PR completely?

    2. When I type in the domain name alone (let alone my keywords) on google it does not show - I assume this means that it has not been indexed yet - when may this happen?

    3. I have assessed another site which has very strong search engine results and 5,000 uniques a day. They use ALT tags on images to fill with keywords - is this allowed?!

    4. What else would you suggest?

Thanks you very much in advance!

    1. It's not how many sites you link but how many link to you which matters.

    2. It means you haven't been indexed yet. There's no telling when you will be indexed, but you should have some inbound links (links to you).

    You can also use http://www.google.com/addurl.html

    3. Using ALT tags for images is allowed and encouraged.

    4. Submit you site to some directories like dmoz.org and make sure you have other sites linking to yours.

Can you load your alt tags with listed keywords with no meaning as a sentence?

cjj ... I would advise doing some extensive research on particular keywords where you will want your site to show up when they are typed into search engines. Then use these keywords meaningfully on your home page for better results and better indexing. You will need to be patient with google because it can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months for it to show up in Google. Go ahead and submit it to the others like yahoo, msn, etc.. while waiting as they are much faster.

    Good luck

Alt tags are meant for people who have images turned off. So, try and explain the what the image is trying to tell in a short description.

Google is in so much of a FLUX right now... Is it even worth it anymore.. PR is all screwed up .. Supplemental results are making people go crazy .. Just my two cents. I miss the traffic from google though
