you buy keywords like you would at google, like diabetes, cancer etc. they give you list of similar names that people search for, and different websites and search engines that particpiate when people search for the keywords you bought a link comes up with your website and if people click on it it goes directly to your website. I beleive ppcforum.com or a similar site gives a list of all ppc providers. kanoodle does it for less than google and no big investment like google, whats nice is you can target the keywords to what you sell. IE: california health insurance etc

Link popularity improvements can get your site ranked higher in the Search engines. Search engines can bring lots of traffic depending on the term.

Google's AdWords program, Yahoo's sitematch, Overture... You could set up an affiliate program too.
