Source: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogsp...-meta-tag.html
On the contrary a good optimized description tag might will not affect the search Engine rankings. What a good description tag can do is improve the click through rate of a website from the serps.
I suggest you use good optimized meta description tags for both your website and posts... It will improve the clicks you get fro mthe serps...
Don't rely on Google's default description for this
meta tags can still help though google don't recognize it anymore.
The only meta tags of importance today is the meta description and title tags, to encourage click through rates from the serps. Yahoo has come out and said they don't use the meta keyword tag anymore, and I know google places zero importance on the keyword tag as well.
