Unfortunately, I have to agree. Unless you have access to some really high traffic high PR properly anchored backlinks, it's impossible to rank high that quickly.
It's the initial boost that happens sometimes, but dies soon. I've even had this happen with newly parked pages.
It's easy to rank #1 for a search string if your domain consists of the exact keywords and/or you are targeting those words in the title, description and content (especially valid with long tail domains and/or uncommon keyword terms).
'The traffic and links are not important compared to the above which high or #1 ranking can be accomplished with no traffic, PR or links, imo. I also don't believe the fact it may be new is relevant, imo.

New sites often have a initial boost but that don't mean he won't stay there. A good never ending campaing will surely keep you there and improve.
Yes, there are lots of SEO books containing some interesting free link building tactics, the more you know the better.
Don't focus only on PR6, focus on every relevant categories, something like if you have a web development blog, links from web design/SEO/domain/ or any other similar websites are great. It often happens that many of those web pages will use some similar terms like your carefully choosen anchor texts and that's great. Makes relevancy.
Good luck!
The real question should be: How much traffic are you receiving?
You see that is the point. In a competitive niche you would be getting nice traffic from the 2nd page as well. You are either targeting a not so searched niche, or you got the initial boost as the others are stating.
