One question..

Hi guys,

I don't know much about SEO but can I ask you a question?

Which one will Google give prefernce to while displaying the results out of the two below?

seattle.property.com
seattleproperty.com

thanks,

Re: One question..

They are both pretty much the same in the eyes of Google. However keep in mind that seattle.property.com is a subdomain of property.com. Google treats subdomains independently of the main domain.

at the end of the day it wont really matter that much in terms of rankings. As it more depends on your site, how it is structured and what you are trying to rank for. Its not like you are going to get a huge boost from one or the other mentioned above.

Re: One question..

The word PROPERTY is a much more generic word and overall would have tremendously more traffic than any of the others.

If you own property.com you're sitting on a gold mine. Then you can add any extension.../sanfrancisco, /chicago, /newyork, /bumfuque.

If you don't own property.com then you can forget about the two choices containing that domain.

"property.com" 504,000
"seattle.property.com" 2 (as in the number two)
"seattleproperty.com" 25
"property.com/seattle" 0

But as a general search term (as most people would type it in) SEATTLE PROPERTY 12,300,000.

I heard, Google ignores a dot and gives priority to "seattle.property.com" when someone types 'seattle property' ? is that true?

thanks,

Re: One question..

Not quite sure what you are asking...to see for yourself, put the proposed domain in "quotes" including the dots (.) That is how domainers would test the validity of the domain as if an actual search was being done for that domain. It is not 100% accurate but will give you some idea of the traffic that it would bring.

SEATTLE PROPERTY is simply something I or anyone else would type in a search tool bar to hunt for property in and around the Seattle area.

Take those same search terms and apply it to Overture, with and without the (.)

property.com 956
seattle.property.com (0)
seattleproperty.com (0)
property.com/seattle (0)

73 seattle property, property seattle
81064 property

Of the options, seattleproperty.com (25) is a winner in this case as it is already searched for on Google. The real issue is ranking. Just because there are over 12 mil returns does not mean that's how great your domain will be. That means there is that much competition for the same search words.

Sound confusing? It can be. Plus, I would imagine we are not even really talking about Seattle. Perhaps using that as an example.

But do your own test. Many use google as a benchmark but I use other search engines like yahoo and sometimes Dogpile as it crawls all the other engines.

I would imagine there are some other favorite methods out there that I would be willing to try.

Keep in mind these are just tools to be used as a guideline. Nothing is perfect. How the domain is ultimately branded, marketed, and name recognition are the keys to success.
