PageRank - Do links on SUBPAGES get a boost?

Common Assumption: A text link INTO your website from a page with high PageRank will boost your site's ratings.

Question: What about links on subpages?

    Example:
    Widgets.com has PR5
    Widgets.com/Cars/ has PR2
    Widgets.com/Cars/RedCars.htm has PR0

The owner is selling "PR5" text links, but your link will be placed on Widgets.com/Cars/RedCars.htm, which is PR0.

Does this work in improving rankings, or do I have to be on the "front page" to get the PR5?

I'm thinking I have to be on the PR5 page, which means most of the text links sold on DNForum are fairly worthless. Am I wrong?

    Thanks!

Re: PageRank - Do links on SUBPAGES get a boost?

It doesn't matter whether the page is a "main page", or a "subpage", but it's the PR of the page your link is on that counts. Google doesn't care whether it's the index page or not, (the homepage of a PR3 site is worth the same as a PR3 subpage of a PR7 site), but if your link is on a PR0 subpage then it's worthless.

BTW, most owner's don't advertise "PR5" links if they are talking about PR0 placements, at least not on this site. If someone is selling PR5 links, then it's assumed that the actual link placement page is PR5.

It's also important to note that just because a sup-page might have a PR similiar to the main page, the spiders might crawl it less and that's another reason sub-pages are less valuable.

Yes, I have seen this too. Some people exchange links/sell text link ads from a PR0 page of a PR5 homepage website as a PR5 link exchange, and the problem is since not everybody is clear of what exactly PR is, they just do it.

Maybe the mod's need to clean up the text link forum for those who don't have the proper PR

There shouldn't be any ambiguity - each webpage has its own PR, not necessarily related to the PR of the main website.

And it is even possible for a sub-page to have a higher page rank than the homepage ... very rare but it does happen every once in awhile ...

    What's a sub-page? Each page of a website is a page.

Yes, spiders will follow any link that they can see and read (that is not disallowed.)

Don't get confused though... If a domain has a PR5 domain.com/index.php page, and a "sub-page" such as domain.com/directory/index.php which is PR0 and you are only linked on the sub-page, then you are not going to have the same benefits as being linked from the PR5 page.

Yep, I can confirm this. I have this in one of my sites right now. Has been that way for over a year. Most pages on the site have a PR3 but this one holds a PR 4.
