    Product domain. Will .net hurt?

    Greetings,

I am sure this is a commonly asked SEO question..Hope someone can answer!

If I am trying to develop a one word product domain with a .net while the .com version is a parked page, will that matter?

Let's say I develop this as an e-commerce site to sell the product online:

    1. Can this .net site reach # 1 on Google?
    2. If the .com owner decides to develop his domain and does the same thing at a later date, will my site (.net) automatically lose it's ranking just because it's a .net ?

Let's assume, the domain in question is Cars.net..and also assume Cars.com is a parked domain for now..

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks,

    1 - yes
    2 - no

It's quality of contents, links, site age, seo...
    Develop it

    Yes!

    No!

However, you have to keep in mind that the .com will be easier to rank. You will hear some saying that as far as SEO goes, the extension doesn't really matter, but I have noticed that most search engines tend to prefer .COMs.

If the .com owner decides to develop his name and follows the exact steps you did, while you do nothing, then eventually he will outrank you - but that's highly unlikely if you don't just give up on the site.

    That's my 2 cents

I had a developed .org beat out a developed .com - same domain (except the TLD, same subject).

Heck, even the .net - which was forwarded to the .org beat out the developed .com.

Later - the owner of the .com gave up and now I own all 3.

Its all about SEO (content quality, frequent updates, keyword density and use, etc..).

the only advantage he would have over you is the typin traffic if its a high searches keyword etc. But in terms in serps the .net can easily outrank him

This very question was heavily debated at other domain forum recently.
Just go to Google and type in - cd covers
    #1 is .cc
    #4 is .to

cdcovers.cc has alexa rank of 2955

    Again, Go DEVELOP

Hi Sai, You probably already know I am a big fan of .org and can report I have a number of org's which beat-out the com's in both scenario 1 and 2. Not so sure about .net as I don't have many net's but suspect it can be true for net too.
