I recommend doing it yourself. I speak from experience, so if you know basic HTML it is easy to optimize your tags and text, it is just time consuming but there is nothing to it and it's basically common sense. If you're totally new to SEO there are a lot of forums and excellent articles on it; try Google. The hardest thing is getting PR; other sites to link to you. Maybe that's what your looking for? Nothing I paid for I couldn't have done myself; maybe I saved you some money

Clicknow... I most definitely do NOT want to do it myself. While I am sure it is not incredibly complicated (in fact I do understand the basics), I have no time or inclination to learn a new skill that can easily and inexpensively be subcontracted out. I work full-time plus, have an 8 month old baby, and a social life I constantly try to keep from slipping away. My time on the web is a luxury I grab in little pieces several times a day.

I am trying http://www.seoinc.com, as pointed out by Alien, and they are number one in google, yahoo, msn and other search engines for the term "search engine optimization". The fee for mine is their minimum, which is $8000 for 6 months. No I figure, I used to spend a lot more than that on ppc advertising with half-assed results, so that is not that much money to be listed in the top ten for excellent keywords. Also, they don't charge for keywords, they charge by how many pages you want optimized. I figured if they could do it for themselves, then they could do it for me, and they have top clients like vegas.com and boats.com. I would give it a try at least.

SEO is not tough. SERP is the tough one. Very few people need SEO, but everybody want SERP. I would not pay 8k for SEO, but 8k is a good price for good SERP.

You want good SERP, you need to put lot of time and money on your site.

Honestly I think you overpaid.

For $2k you can get some pretty good work done IMO.

I am not sure he overpaid. The price may seem a bit high, but not knowing what site he wanted SEO for, believe me, one cannot really say 8k was high or not. Though MOST sites can be done for 2k or under, I myself have charged much more according to the competetiveness of the category a site is in...
