Thinking about buying an established website

The website I am interested in really nice and it is producing income. My problem is I don't like the domain name. I have a better one I want to use, BUT I am wondering that if I change the domain and forward all traffic from the old domain to the new site. is this going to affect my SEO?

would I be stuck using the old domain just because?

Is your other domain has keyword in it?

For example, existing site is "jsldkdl.com" and has good SE position for keyword "sample".
Your other domain has "sample" in it?

If so, you may want to use 301 permanent redirect?
It may lose some SE traffic initially, but, not for long.
