Tough question. You generally get what you pay for. There are good SEOs and there are bad SEOs.

I would actually look for a link builder, not necessarily an "SEO".

Do a simple google search for "professional seo" or "seo" and see which companies rank at the top.

There are 1000 people who think they know SEO because they ranked for "used tennis rackets" once for every 1 good one. Be very careful because they tend not to be as results driven as a lot of SEMs.

Gosh that's a very generalized statement. It depends on various factors, including competitiveness of terms and who is taking on the job.

lol. The best advice. A good SEO expert would make his own site rank at the top.

Agreed, but for competitive words - I have found that north of 10k is what people want who are good at what they do - and Ive checked extensively

Not saying its worth it - just my insights

For any decent keyword, a $2k start and a $500-$1k mo. is normal. But if you're selling something and get targeted traffic for that its worth its weight in gold.

For top keywords and for high value industries like web hosting and dedicated server you're looking at something like a $5k start and then $2k mo. But if you can sell even 10 dedicated servers a month, that is worth almost 5k in revenue. And 10 is doable.

Low value keywords - 'legitimate' and 'on - topic' link building is the best option.

He would and I do LOL

Or rather I am #2 for "Professional SEO"... of course I own the domain so it makes it a little easier. Actually the site is a mess since I went from a corporate type site to a blog format and now I am wanting to go back to a corporate site so dont judge me by how empty the site looks since I have been busy with actual projects and have steady clients so I dont have a need for many more plus as the poster said I am busy with ranking my own sites as well. Send me a PM though cliff with your site and your budget and I will help you out. I can show you a few sites ranking for dramatically hard keywords- I am talking in the hundreds of millions of results.
