"I found that ChefPatrickSucks.com was registered under privacy protection, looked up the information through Moniker’s admin system, then contacted the protected person’s boss to launch a vicious attack against this person’s character and to get them fired."

You would think he would have registered patrickrudellsucks.com by now before someone else does.

The core issue here is the breach of trust - and the culture at Oversee.net/Moniker.

...What it says about Chef Patrick's character - and Schwartz's motivations - is only of minimal interest, imo....The rest is blah, blah.

    Does all this matter?

Ultimately, Chef Patrick doesn't matter. His explanation is of passing interest, imo....He did what he did. Now we all know it. Domainers will make their own judgement about his integrity, and whether, or not, they wish to do business with him in the future. Or, whether to attach any value to anything he stands for....Chef Patrick isn't important.

But, Oversee.net? Moniker? And, privacy breaches?....Yes, that IS important.....Its important for many reasons - not least of which is these guys have their footprint on so many aspects of the domain industry....including over 3 million other people's domains that are registered at Moniker.

...We need to know that the people that run that place understand decent business practice....That they understand what serious business requires....That there is a priority placed upon honest dealings, and top technical expertise to protect the interests & property of their customers.

....We need to know if the culture at Oversee.net is simply incompetent, or crooked.

I haven't yet heard Oversee.net - or, Moniker - say a single word on this serious privacy breach. Why not?

With past scandals (viz Halvarez) hasen't Oversee.net learned anything about decent values, honest dealing, and transparent communication with the market - and with their customers...???!!!

Maybe Prick Schwartz believes as follows: he is Dionysius and Chef Patrick is Damocles.

I hope he looked at whois of only ChefPatrickSucks.com , nothing else. And has paid the price.

Who regged it and what was the motive behind it ? It will be interesting to watch out....

IMO the Chef did nothing to help himself with his "explanation" other than to lose more credibility and respect.

He should have just owned up to his mistake and sincerely apologized. Period.

I really don't follow Rick or (and especially) Chef.

So, how is this prick Rick's fault? Because he made an issue out of someone breaking privacy and security measures in place?

I think Rick has just exposed what many of us already knew...it's a hush hush industry, no one wants to be held accountable and responsible, especially when someone breaks the law...ala Halverez and potentially Chef. It seems to only get worse at the top. Think the .travel fiasco, RegFly, Halverez and more...they get away with nearly everything because they write their own rules.

Courts can not even get that information that he had access to...unless a court issues a warrant.

There is not a single damn breech of security caused by a computer...it is caused by the person sitting at the computer.

Agree; there is bigger shit to worry about in life than what two domain boys want to do.

But I can assure you that if it was you on the opposite end of the breech you'd be screaming bloody hell.

The real question is why can a employee of a a company just look under the privacy protection, in his stupidity the chef exposed a valuable thing that many people should realize that privacy protection is nothing if it can be opened on a whim!

Hmmm. You made a good point. I wonder at what minimum level an employee can access this data.

Look at it this way...privacy is privacy.

When Britney Spears was hospitalized, 17 people (who all had access) but were not directly involved with her care logged into her data.

    All 17 people were fired.

Okay, now someone come on in and tell me that's different. I say, privacy is privacy is privacy. It is a breech. It is a breech of trust. A system is only as secure and trustworthy as the bozo's who have access to that media.

A few highly publicized lawsuits involving domains, domainers, and registrars would go a long way to clean this industry up.

    Ooops, I'm sorry...I forgot - it's never a domainers fault.

I though everybody knew these registrar whois privacy things are not reliable? What do you pay, $1 or $2 / year? What do you expect? Besides, when you change the whois you are changing the legal owner of the domain so the whole concept is flawed.
